”So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.“ Genesis 1:27 ESV There have been times when I gaze in the mirror and spend a little too much time critiquing what I see. I wish I was a few inches taller, I wish I still had a full head of brown hair, I need to lose weight, and I see some wrinkles where there used to be smoother skin; it is that tendency to spend time seeking out the flaws instead of being thankful for who God has made me to be. I certainly wouldn’t do the same with my son, and of course my grandchildren are absolutely pictures of perfection. Yet I, and I suspect some of you others, cannot see ourselves with the eyes of the one who knit us together in our mother’s womb. I remember the pride and joy I used to feel when our son was young and people would say he was my mini-me. What if I started thinking of myself as God’s mini-me? It’s not meant to be sacrilegious or prideful, but we are told that we are created in His image, and if we believe that, it should change the way we judge ourselves, and help us realize we are people who are loved and accepted by God because we are the work of his hands. I hope and pray that this year will begin with thanks instead of regrets, and praise instead of wishing for things I cannot change. And when I decide to stop focusing on the unchangeable, I can focus what I can do; I can make a choice to seek God with all my heart, and to desire to know him more deeply with each new day I am given.
