As a young boy playing soccer on the street of Sicily, Rosario Maira never dreamed he would someday own an Italian Restaurant in Texas.
Growing up the oldest child of seven, he was expected to help Momma Josephine in the kitchen, soon he began paying more attention to the recipes and the art of cooking.
After Rosario married his wife Judy his recipe collection grew to include her mother’s favorites which added a Neopolitan flavor.
Rosario opened Rosario’s Flying Pizza & Italian Restaurant in Texas City in 1978, and it has been serving the best pizza and Italian food ever since

The HUT Team is still on the adrenaline rush following a very emotional and special evening. The inaugural, in-person HUT Honors celebrated young adults who are "blooming where they grow" and those nurturing and loving them as they make their dreams a reality.
With nearly 200 people in attendance, we felt the love surrounding our organization!
Being less than 3 years old and having so many people helping build the HUT community is very encouraging for the young adults in our program.
I can never, ever thank you all enough.

Congratulations to Rotarian Brandy James Liss on her Paul Harris Fellow recognition!
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.
"I am so honored to receive the Paul Harris Fellow and to be a part of something that is truly making a difference.
After attending PETS this year and getting a better understanding of how our contributions through Rotary impact our community and the world makes me even more proud to be a Rotarian.
Understanding that the contribution is not "to" Rotary but "through" Rotary allows me to understand how we make a difference to all the efforts we support to strengthen peace, health and well being and economic growth.
To be a part of an organization that focuses on taking care of our environment, fights diseases, supports moms and children inspires me and being able to give to the foundation that supports these efforts gives me hope.
With all that is going on in the world today, we need to support foundations and organizations that are doing what is needed to improve and sustain humanitarian efforts, education and bridge the gap between cultural differences.
I will continue to support all that I can so that we can continue the efforts both internationally and within our community."

The League City Rotary Club celebrated the success of the 9th Annual Polar Bear Plunge for Polio! The club successfully raised nearly $6,000 for Rotary International End Polio Now campaign.
Plungers of all ages participated in the event.
Each plunger received a certificate, a stuffed polar bear, and a one-of-a-kind Polar Plunge Ornament. The top three fundraisers were Rotarians Amy Killgore, Ava Sloan, and Misty Gawalek.
With the help of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the $6,000 will be matched 2:1.
The final gift to the End Polio Now campaign will turn into $18,000!
Worldwide polio eradication is one of Rotary International’s many goals. More than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine since 1988 because of Rotary.
Currently, the war on polio is focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan, the last two countries in the world that still has polio spreading.
All other parts of the world have been declared polio-free.

The big question in March is "Are You Ready?"
We are exploring the HUT Core Value Readiness!
Seliena Corrington of Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital dug deep into her journey and shared events throughout her life where she had to stay ready for anything that her multifaceted life presented to her and explained how she "filled in the gaps" along the way when they occurred.
Seliena gave the HUTs a safe place to discuss times in their own lives when they had to be ready for whatever obstacle was in the way.
We were once again reminded how resilient and remarkable young adults are.

Houston Zoo
Last week, before the colder temps rolled in, we released our first cold-stunned turtles this season off the beach at Padre Island National Seashore. During the winter months, sea turtles are susceptible to being “cold stunned,” which means they become lethargic and are unable to swim when water temperatures drop rapidly.
Many of these turtles will suffer from pneumonia and other medical conditions.
Our team released 7 green sea turtles that had been cold stunned last month, 1 small green sea turtle that was found stranded prior to the cold front, and 1 Kemp’s Ridley that had been caught by a local fisherman last year.
The Houston Zoo’s veterinary team oversaw the care and treatment of these turtles and rehabilitated 7 of them before they were cleared to be released back into the wild.
Thanks to our partners at the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research at Texas A&M for rehabilitating two of these turtles, along with Texas Parks and Wildlife, for helping bring these stranded sea turtles into our care!

EMS Celebrates David Brandt's Retirement
It wasn’t too long ago when it was unheard of for paramedics and EMTs to stay in EMS as a career and retire.
EMS is a physical job that creates wear and tear on the body.
In the 1980s and 1990s EMS was a stepping stone to other careers, but now more and more are staying in the field.
EMS is very rewarding and there have been recent equipment improvements to reduce the physical needs of the job.
Keeping and growing experience in pre-hospital medicine pays dividend in better patient outcomes and League City EMS is one of the more senior EMS staffs in the area.
Friday, EMS began its celebration of the retirement of Captain David Brandt as that was his retirement day.
David served as the Training Officer running continuing education, new employee startup and CPR for the public.
He has served the City well beginning as a volunteer firefighter in 1988 and rose to be a volunteer fire chief.
His passion for EMS grew and he came on full time with EMS in 2004.
He brought military experience from the Air Force and was an impact employee from the beginning.
So, the sadness of him leaving is overshadowed by EMS’s admiration of his accomplishments as a retiring paramedic.
He is only the third employee to retire from EMS in League City. Congratulations, David!

Social-Emotional-Learning in Santa Fe
As educators, our job is to prepare all students for life after school.
This includes academics, but also emotional intelligence. Our social-emotional lessons (SEL) are designed to help our students better understand not only their feelings but the feelings of those around them.
This, in turn, creates a learning environment in which students feel recognized and understood.
Last week at Kubacak Elementary, the students’ Character Strong lesson focused on empathy.
While at Santa Fe High School, students' Character Strong lesson focused on social belonging.
Students discussed various topics with their teachers and then participated in whole group activities with their peers.
To learn more about SEL on your child/s campus, contact their school counselor.

We took her to a rehabber that specializes in bats and she’s fixing to be transported to Bat World.

She was in good spirits despite her last 24 hours.
But, look at this face. O.M.G YALL …
I almost got teary-eyes because that’s the cutest little face I’ve ever seen! Best wishes to our little friend! She’ll be in good hands!

INJURED PELICAN SAVED
Did you know that our League City Animal Care Animal Protection Officers do so much more than just picking up lost dogs and cats?
Last week, the police dispatch line received a call from a few young boys who found a pelican in their neighborhood with a fishing wire stuck in its mouth and wing.
When officers arrived, one of the boys was holding the line to make sure the bird didn’t get away before help arrived.
Officers Megan and Amy worked fast to net the pelican and begin the work of removing the life threatening entanglement.
Officer Amy gently restrained the bird while Officer Megan carefully removed the hook from his large beak and wings.
Once he was free of all the hooks and finishing line, he was released & flew off across the water.
Thank you to our compassionate Animal Protection Officers who make a difference in the lives of animals in our community every day and also to the boys who saved this bird by calling it in and keeping it from leaving the area!

He has been at the shelter for way too long for how sweet of a personality he has!!!
This little man needs to find his forever home ASAP! from those who work closely with Jimbo:
