As governments and local authorities continue to mandate social distancing measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, non-essential travel is out of the question. But while you’re quarantining at home, you can still see one of nature’s most stunning atmospheric phenomena: Explore.org and Polar Bears International are live streaming the northern lights.
The live cam is located at the Churchill Northern Studies Center in Manitoba, Canada. Since the cam is situated directly under the aurora oval, you’ll see amazing views of emerald green curtains of lights dancing in the arctic sky. Although the northern lights occur year-round, according to Explore.org, late winter and early spring are the best seasons to see the lights. So now’s the perfect time to watch the live stream. Tune in during the darkest hours of the night, which are generally from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. EDT. If you want to virtually explore more of the great outdoors, check out these video tours of five national parks. Led by rangers, the tours journey through fjords, volcanoes, caverns and coral reefs. You can also welcome spring by virtually tour these five gorgeous gardens from across the world. And if you want to get some fresh air outdoors, you can visit national parks that are still open for free right now (Just keep in mind the World Health Organization recommends staying at least three feet away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing).
