If you've stepped outside on a hot Texas afternoon and heard a loud, almost electric buzzing coming from the trees, you're listening to one of the most recognizable sounds of summer—the cicada.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, summer is prime cicada season, and these fascinating insects have a life story that's every bit as remarkable as the noise they make.

Who's Making All That Noise?Those incredibly loud calls primarily come from male cicadas.

Male cicadas produce their characteristic songs to attract females. Rather than rubbing their wings together like crickets, cicadas use specialized structures called tymbals on their abdomen. Rapidly flexing these structures creates the powerful buzzing, clicking and droning sounds associated with summer.

Some cicadas can produce sounds approaching lawnmower-level loudness, especially when large numbers are calling together.

Each species has its own distinctive call, allowing females to recognize males of the same species.

At first, the cicada is pale and soft with delicate wings. Over time, its body darkens, its exoskeleton hardens and its wings become ready for flight.

The empty shell remains behind—sometimes for weeks—as evidence of the transformation.

They Spend Most of Their Lives UndergroundThe adult cicadas we see flying through our yards represent only a tiny portion of their lives.

After cicada eggs hatch, young nymphs fall to the ground and burrow beneath the soil. There, they feed on fluids associated with plant roots while developing through several stages.

Depending on the species, cicadas can remain underground for multiple years before emerging.

Texas is primarily home to annual cicadas, a term that doesn't necessarily mean an individual cicada completes its entire life cycle in one year. Instead, different generations overlap, allowing adults to emerge every summer.

That's why Texans can count on hearing that familiar chorus almost every year.

Adult Life Is Surprisingly ShortAfter spending years developing underground, adulthood is brief.

Once cicadas emerge, their priorities are simple: mature, find a mate and reproduce.

After mating and egg-laying, adults generally survive only a matter of weeks.

Their offspring then begin the cycle all over again, disappearing underground for years before another generation eventually climbs into the Texas sunshine.

Are Cicadas Dangerous?
Despite their intimidating appearance and incredible volume, cicadas are generally harmless to people.

They don't sting, and they aren't interested in attacking humans or pets.

They're also an important part of the ecosystem. Cicadas provide food for birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, spiders and other wildlife. Their emergence can temporarily provide an enormous food source throughout the environment.

After they die, their bodies also return nutrients to the soil.

League City Opens Registration for 2026 National Night Out

LEAGUE CITY, TEXAS — Neighborhoods across League City are invited to come together for an evening of community, conversation, and connection as registration officially opens for National Night Out 2026.

The League City Police Department and League City Fire Department will celebrate this year's National Night Out on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, joining communities across Texas in an annual tradition designed to strengthen relationships between residents and the first responders who serve them.

For neighborhoods interested in participating, registration is required, and the deadline to sign up is Friday, September 25, 2026.

Bringing Neighbors and First Responders Together

National Night Out is much more than a neighborhood block party.

The nationwide community-building campaign encourages residents to get outside, meet their neighbors, and develop stronger relationships with local law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other public-safety professionals.

Galveston County Begins Late-Summer Mosquito Larvicide Project

Residents across Galveston County may notice Mosquito Control trucks traveling through neighborhoods and along county roads as crews begin their annual late-summer larvicide project.

But there's an important distinction residents should know: these trucks are not spraying pesticide into the air.

The work is part of a preventative mosquito-control effort designed to target mosquitoes during their larval stage—before they become the flying, biting mosquitoes residents encounter around their homes and neighborhoods.

What Are the Crews Doing?According to information from Galveston County Mosquito Control, two surveillance teams are currently working throughout the county to distribute larvicide pellets in locations where mosquitoes are likely to breed.

Each team consists of a driver and another employee who distributes small larvicide pellets from the vehicle into areas such as:

Roadside ditches
Low-lying areas
Locations that regularly hold standing water
Other potential mosquito breeding sites

Residents may hear the vehicles and assume regular mosquito spraying is underway because the trucks can sound similar to the county's normal spray vehicles.

However, nothing is being sprayed into the air during this operation.
Instead, crews are placing pellets directly into areas where mosquito larvae can develop.

Stopping Mosquitoes Before They Start Flying
Mosquitoes require water to complete the early stages of their life cycle. Females lay eggs in or near water, and the larvae develop in the water before eventually emerging as adult mosquitoes.

What may seem like a harmless vacation tradition is becoming a growing public safety concern on Galveston Island.

City officials are urging residents and visitors to stop feeding the raccoons that inhabit the eastern end of the Galveston Seawall after seven people reported being bitten in just the past two weeks. During a recent inspection, officials counted 21 raccoons along one stretch of the Seawall, with concerns that the actual population may be even larger.

Why Are the Raccoons Becoming Aggressive?According to Galveston Animal Services, the problem isn't a mystery.

For years, visitors have been leaving behind fast food, snacks, cat food, and other treats for the raccoons despite posted signs asking people not to feed wildlife. As a result, the animals have become accustomed to receiving food directly from people instead of searching naturally for insects, crabs, fish, and other food sources.

Officials say many of the raccoons have become unusually bold, approaching people during daylight hours, surrounding bags, and even walking up to visitors expecting another meal.

This behavior increases the likelihood of bites and other dangerous encounters.

What Happens If You're Bitten?Although none of the raccoons involved have been confirmed to have rabies, raccoons are considered a high-risk wildlife species for rabies exposure.

Because of that risk, the individuals who were bitten were referred to the Galveston County Health District for preventive rabies treatment, also known as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Officials stress that avoiding contact with wild animals is the best way to protect yourself and your family.

The Goal Is Education—Not EliminationAt this time, the City of Galveston says it has no announced plans to euthanize or relocate the Seawall raccoon colony.

Instead, officials hope education and public cooperation will solve the problem by encouraging people to:

Never feed raccoons or other wildlife.
Secure food and dispose of trash properly.
Observe wildlife from a safe distance.
Keep pets away from wild animals.
Report aggressive wildlife to local authorities.

Animal Services is also exploring the possibility of an ordinance that would allow citations for individuals who continue feeding the raccoons if voluntary compliance does not improve.

A rare marine mammal rescue effort along the Texas coast is reminding beachgoers that sometimes the best way to help wildlife is to leave the rescue to trained professionals.

Over the past two days, the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) responded to an unusual and heartbreaking case involving a melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra), a deep-water species that is rarely seen close to shore. The response stretched hundreds of miles—from Galveston to Port Aransas—underscoring both the rarity of the event and the dedication of the nonprofit team that answered the call.

An Unusual Visitor Along the Texas CoastMelon-headed whales are not commonly found in shallow coastal waters. These highly social dolphins—despite their name, they belong to the dolphin family—typically inhabit warm, deep offshore waters throughout tropical and subtropical oceans.

Because they are adapted for life far from shore and capable of deep dives, a stranding often signals that something is seriously wrong.

During this incident, TMMSN received multiple reports that the whale had repeatedly stranded on the beach and had been pushed back into the water several times by compassionate beachgoers hoping to save its life.

While the intentions were admirable, wildlife experts say this can actually make matters worse.

Why You Should Never Push a Stranded Whale or Dolphin Back Into the WaterMarine mammals strand for many reasons, including:

Serious illness
Injury
Severe infection
Exposure to toxins
Neurological disorders
Disorientation
Extreme exhaustion

When a whale or dolphin strands itself, it is often unable to survive on its own.

Returning the animal to the water without a professional assessment may:

Prolong suffering
Increase stress and exhaustion
Delay lifesaving veterinary care
Prevent experts from determining the cause of the stranding
Place people at risk from large, stressed marine mammals

Instead, experts recommend keeping a safe distance, protecting the animal from additional stress, and immediately contacting trained responders.

A Difficult but Compassionate DecisionAlthough the response occurred outside TMMSN's normal service area, there is currently no dedicated whale and dolphin stranding response organization based in South Texas. Responders traveled from Galveston to provide specialized assistance.

When the team arrived, beachgoers had done exactly what responders hope the public will do—providing shade for the animal, keeping their distance, and waiting for trained personnel.

After a thorough veterinary assessment, responders determined that the whale's condition was too severe for recovery.

Because melon-headed whales are deep-diving cetaceans that do not tolerate rehabilitation in captivity—and because there are currently no rehabilitation facilities equipped to care for stranded animals of this species—the difficult but humane decision was made to euthanize the whale to prevent further suffering.

Learning From Every StrandingFollowing the response, TMMSN conducted a necropsy, the animal equivalent of an autopsy, to better understand what caused the whale to strand.

Scientists collected tissue and biological samples that will undergo additional laboratory testing.
Every stranding provides valuable scientific information that helps researchers better understand marine mammal health, disease, environmental conditions, and emerging threats affecting wildlife in the Gulf.
