Tickets on sale for Galveston Art League Garden Party

4/23/2021

Galveston Art League will hold a garden party fundraiser on Sunday, May 23. The event, which includes
a multicourse catered meal and various beverages, is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. at Garten Verein, 2704
Ave. O in Galveston.
The garden party, a crucial source of funding for the nonprofit Art League, has evolved from an autumn
supper indoors at a hotel into this more-casual spring luncheon at the renowned indoor-outdoor site.
The theme for the event is “A Garden Party,” and the league urges guests to jump-start their party
moods by wearing theme-related costumes or choosing their casual party attire to mesh with the
theme. Note that attendees are expected to wear facemasks when they are not eating or drinking.
The catered meal of brisket, chicken with a bourbon sauce, potatoes, carrots, beans, rolls, and two
desserts will be prepared by Christina Heard. Guests also may choose from a wide range of beverages –
soft drinks, wine, beer, and a limited number of brunch-type mixed drinks.
To spice up the afternoon, the Art League has organized a silent auction, two raffles, live music
performances, and a facemask contest.
Items up for bid in the silent auction will be merchandise and services contributed by area businesses,
gift cards for local merchants and restaurants, and dozens of works by regional artists. The art will be
diverse, with a mix of oil and watercolor paintings, 3-D pieces, and mixed-media works, all of them ready
for display in your home or workplace or to give as gifts.
The raffles will be for two large gift baskets – one of them brimming with alcoholic beverages and party
snacks; the other holds a selection of gardening tools and supplies. Tickets for both raffles, which cost
$10 apiece or three for $25, are being sold in the Art League’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. The gallery is
open from noon until 6 p.m. Fridays-Sundays and until 9 p.m. for ArtWalk, Saturday, April 24. You do not
have to be present to win a raffle prize.
Local musicians who are performing will be singer Jenny Lanier and harpist Dr. Joanna Whitsett (she’s
also the organist for Moody Methodist Church on the island); they will perform indoors. Guitarists Rhys
O’Farrell and Allen Kirkpatrick also will stroll and strum, playing outdoors if weather permits.
If you want to compete for a prize in the facemask contest, get creative in line with the garden party
theme.
Gala tickets cost $100 apiece for general seating and $250 for prime seating. A table for 10 is $2,500,
and a table for eight costs $2,000. Those who purchase tables will have ads in the program.

You may reserve your seat at the gala with the volunteer staffing the Galveston Art League Gallery,
2117A Postoffice St., from noon-6 p.m. Fridays-Sundays (and until 9 p.m. during ArtWalk this Saturday,
April 24). Tickets also are available at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. For further details about the
event, call 409-938-1671 or email [email protected].
So please consider turning your May 23 lunch into a genuine event along with members and other
supporters of the all-volunteer league. For 107 years, Galveston Art League has never had a salaried
staffer as it has advocated on behalf visual arts by hosting educational events and advocating on behalf
of the region’s artists.
If you are unable to attend the party but want to support the Art League by donating a silent auction
item or making a cash contribution, please call 409-938-1671 or email [email protected].
