The Salvation Army Serves Up Smiles on National Donut Day Social service organization warms hearts with donuts and hope Galveston County, TX (June 2020) – Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day is a sweet time to celebrate America’s heroes. The holiday was originally established to honor The Salvation Army’s service to soldiers during World War I. Nearly 250 volunteers traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, sweet treats, clothes, and supplies to troops. The “Donut Lassies” hand-delivered the fried confections to the front lines and are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops returned home from war. The historical significance of National Donut Day has a fresh meaning in light of COVID-19. “Now, more than ever, we could all use a little more hope,” said Commissioner David Hudson, national commander for The Salvation Army. “On National Donut Day, we’re continuing the century-old tradition of bringing comfort to communities across the country.” This year, The Salvation Army will celebrate with a moment of goodness in Galveston by delivering donuts graciously provided by Shipley's Galveston to first responders and supporters. The Salvation Army’s service to those on the front lines has continued for more than 100 years as the organization continues to provide snacks, hydration, and comfort to those responding to crisis.
