Galveston Art League Featured Artist Sharon Jones photographs a range of subjects, from
abandoned homesteads to beautiful blossoms, but “my love for animals and the Texas coast has been the inspiration for many of my photographs.” Jones exhibits a selection of her images at the Galveston Art League Gallery from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays-Sundays throughout June and until 9 p.m. for ArtWalk on Saturday, June 4. Her works also are shown and sold online – along with dozens of pieces by other Art League members – at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com starting about June 7. Jones began taking snapshots as a youngster after her grandmother gave her a disposable camera. Once that first roll of film was developed, “I was hooked for life,” she says. Primarily self-taught, Jones has taken workshops and online courses to learn more about photography. “I enjoy experimenting with editing and digital art, and I anticipate new technological advances in photography. I shoot with a Canon R5, Canon 5D Mark III, and iPhone,” she says. Jones’ biggest fan is her husband, Roy, “who has always been my biggest champion and continually fosters my fascination with the latest film processes and methods of capturing the pristine images I see with my camera. He has emboldened me to step outside my comfort zone and share my talents.” Others agree with his talent assessment: Jones has received quite a few awards in competitions. For instance, she took top honors for her digital art in the first two Galveston Art League juried competitions this year, and she won first place in photography in the 2021 Texas City Art Festival. Her pictures also have been accepted into the 2018 Conroe Art League Invitational Show and 2017 National Society of Artists 34th Juried National Show, to name just a couple of her many additional honors. A Galveston resident, Jones is a member of the Professional Photographer’s Association and the Texas Photographic Society in addition to the Galveston Art League. She frequently exhibits her work in the Art League’s downtown Galveston gallery. The Galveston Art League is a 108-year-old nonprofit organization that has never had a salaried employee; all of its functions, from mounting monthly exhibits to setting policies and fundraising, are carried out by volunteers. Membership is open to all – non-artists and artists – who appreciate visual arts and want to enjoy the members-only preview parties each month, as well as other membership benefits.
