The Galveston Art League Gallery has launched a Sept. 5-27 exhibit of 104 artworks accepted into its Fall 2020 Juried Show. Hours for the league’s gallery, at 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston, are noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. To see and shop these same works online, visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com (click on the link “September Juried Show”).
Pieces in this new exhibit include ready-to-hang paintings, photography, and mixed-media works as well as 3-D pieces such as sculpture, pottery, art dolls, and wood carvings. The Art League’s three annual judged competitions are open to member and non-member artists. Houston artist Taylor Clendennen judged the league’s Fall 2020 Juried Show. Clendennen decided which entries to accept for the September gallery exhibit. She also selected pieces to receive the Best of Show, first- and second-place honors, and honorable-mention awards. Painter Jerry Bachman won Best of Show for his acrylic “Red Birds Kiss.” First-place awards are: works on canvas/panel, Peggy Kingsbury’s “Remembering Toulouse-Lautrec”; works on paper, “Distant Lands Orange” by Ariane Edmundson; photography, Matt Logmann’s “The Last Time”; 3-D/wall-hung category: Leticia Schumacher’s “Latin Beauty”; and works in 3-D, “The Mad Hatter” by Marilyn Huston. The iconic seaside watercolor “Great Day Galveston” by painter Jackie Liddell received the McGivney Award. As a result of being chosen for this annual award, the painting is purchased by the Rosenberg Library and will become part of the library’s art collection. The 106-year-old Galveston Art League, a nonprofit organization, hosts juried shows as part of its goal to foster knowledge and admiration of visual art in and beyond the region. The Art League is operated solely by volunteers. In addition to juried competitions, Art League activities include hosting low- and no-cost workshops, holding nine member-only art shows per year, and publicizing area artists through Featured Artist exhibits and marketing efforts. The Galveston Art League is supported by membership and sponsorship fees, a fall gala, direct contributions, entry fees for juried competitions, and modest commissions from the sale of art displayed in the gallery and at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.
