The Clear Lake TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party conducted a Republican Primary candidate debate January 20th. One of the questions was what legislative changes are needed. The full video response may be found on Facebook and on YouTube at the links below but the most important thing for you to know is that EVER INCREASING VALUES is what is impacting your property taxes. That portion of the debate can be found by clicking here!

In the video, I ask whether your 2019 tax bill went down.

For many it did not – NOT because of me or the Texas Legislature (through House Bill 3 they reduced school tax rates from $0.07 to $0.11). It was because of APPRAISAL CREEP and taxpayer funded lobbyists fighting against legislation to shrink government. Senate Bill 2 lowered government spending cat from 8% to 3.25% with an automatic election if exceeded and a multitude of appraisal corrections.

More changes to our current, broken property tax scheme are needed! Scheme? Yes–an organized PLOT to take more of your money every year through current law!

Please listen to the entire video below

Cheryl E. Johnson
Galveston County Tax Assessor Collector

BTW – The last day to pay 2019 property taxes without penalty and interest is Friday, January 31st. Don’t miss this important deadline!
