GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – Kick off a healthier 2020 – and you – with a free New Year, New You event, hosted by the Galveston County Health District (GCHD).
This event, part of GCHD’s Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) initiative, will take place Saturday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Texas City High School, 1431 9th Ave. N. New Year, New You is a free event, open to the public, and features a 1 Mile Fun Run and 5K. Galveston County businesses will also be on hand to offer free healthy eating option samples, healthy living resources, fun activities for the entire family, animals available for adoption, free giveaways and so much more. “Many of us are starting this new year, this new decade, with goals to get healthier,” said Ami Cotharn, RN, BSN, TB and Community Health Services manager. “Whatever your goal is, we are here to help you.” GCHD launched its HEAL initiative in 2018, geared at making Galveston County the healthiest county in Texas. “Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States and HEAL is a way we can combat that on a local level,” said GCHD CEO Kathy Barroso. “Through surveying our clients and the community, we found lack of time and motivation and primary reasons for not eating healthy and exercising.” HEAL resources were developed and include seasonal vegetables and fruits of the month along with recipes featuring those items, diabetic-friendly recipes and tips on managing diabetes, tips on how to shop healthy and on a budget, how to get kids involved in creating healthy meals and snacks, plus free resources to track activity and much more.
