Get healthy with HEAL Join Galveston County Health District to make Galveston County the healthiest county in Texas with a little help from Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL), the newest initiative at the health district. HEAL is available online at www.gchd.org and features videos on how to read a nutrition label and how to pick the best ingredients while shopping. There are also food storage tips, examples of different eating styles and so much more. Free WIC cooking class Learn how to cook with Galveston County Health District’s Women, Infant and Children (WIC) services and Galveston’s Own Farmers Market to create low-cost, delicious and healthy recipes. Classes are available in both Texas City and Galveston, noon- 1 p.m. All ingredients are provided and you get to eat the food you create! This is a FREE class open to WIC clients. Texas City classes will be held at 9850 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Suite B-101, Texas City on Feb. 19, April 16, June 18, Aug. 20, Oct. 15 and Dec. 17. Diabetes 101 Empower yourself to better manage diabetes with Galveston County Health District’s (GCHD) free Diabetes 101 class every Wednesday 3-4 p.m. at the GCHD Texas City WIC Clinic, 9850-B Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Suite B-101.02. Topics include monitoring blood glucose, healthy eating, meal planning, understanding food labels, counting carbs and managing stress through increased activity. Breast cancer screenings The Galveston County Health District and D’Feet Breast Cancer will offer free mammogram screenings, by appointment only, to eligible women 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on the following dates and locations. Extended hours for counseling sessions Life can be stressful and sometimes, that stress can be overwhelming. Coastal Health & Wellness (CHW) offers one-on-one talk therapy sessions for adults and children with licensed professional counselors. CHW is extending its counseling services, offering sessions from 1-7 p.m. on the following dates: Texas City: Monday, Jan. 14; and Monday, Jan. 28. Galveston: Thursday, Dec. 27; Thursday, Jan. 10; and Thursday, Jan. 24. Hours will also be extended in the New Year.
