Artist Susan Ouren Pinkerton is the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for November, with an exhibit
of about a dozen of her paintings at the league gallery, 2117A Postoffice in downtown Galveston. These and other Art League members’ works are offered for sale from noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in the league gallery; you may also see and shop the same exhibit, with online checkout available, at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com by clicking on “November Show.” Pinkerton’s tenure as Featured Artist will begin Oct. 31 and run through Nov. 29. She took a roundabout route toward her pursuit of art. Her graduation from the University of Houston- Clear Lake with degrees in biology and chemistry initially led her to work on those fields. Yet Pinkerton always kept one foot in the artistic world, studying and appreciating the creations of others. Eventually she split from what she calls “my left-brained world” and became a partner in a Houston gallery. Buying and selling art became a passion, and as Pinkerton worked in the gallery, she continued to explore and study her own abilities to create. She appreciates the fine teachers who continue to inspire and encourage her pursuits. “I’m currently focusing on painting with ever-challenging watercolors,” she says. Previously she had painted in oils and pastels. A Houston resident for 30 years, Pinkerton will participate in Brushes by the Beach, a plein air (outdoor painting) contest being held on Galveston Island through Nov. 8. She is a Signature Member of the National Society of Artists and has memberships in the Watercolor Society of Houston, the Baytown Art League, and the Bay Area Plein Air Painters. And, of course, she also belongs to the Galveston Art league, holding a professional membership in that all-volunteer organization. The 106-year-old nonprofit Galveston Art League depends on tax-deductible memberships like Pinkerton’s to support its mission of promoting visual arts and art education in Galveston County and the greater region. The Art League encourages non-artists as well as artists to become members.
