Award-winning painter and art instructor David Wheeler will teach indirect and direct styles of painting
during a Galveston Art League workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24 (an hour is allotted for lunch). Using a limited palette, students will learn or practice techniques as they paint a landscape under Wheeler’s guidance in his Painting with Oils Workshop: Direct and Indirect Styles. He also will teach color theory and proper use of color. To register for the workshop, which costs $50, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and click on the “Workshops” tab at the top of the homepage. Enrollment is limited. If you have questions, call Nancy House at 281-451-5814 or email her at [email protected]. Students should bring the following supplies to the class: paintbrushes (your favorites in various sizes), an 11-by-14-inch canvas, paints (ultramarine blue, viridian green, sap green, apple green, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red, ivory, white, mars black, dioxazine purple, alizarin crimson), medium (whatever you have), and freezer paper or a disposable palette. Wheeler, who has served as a juried show judge, currently teaches beginning and advanced oil painting at the College of the Mainland’s Lifelong Learning Program and at Galveston College in the continuing education department. Oils are his favorite medium. Painting since childhood, he continuously refines his skills with private lessons and by participating in painting workshops. Wheeler travels to Italy and France to paint, and his paintings reflect his many interests. He currently exhibits his work at the Galveston Art League Gallery in Galveston and Rivers Edge Gallery in Kerrville. Wheeler’s workshop is offered as part of the nonprofit Galveston Art League’s mission to advance visual arts and art education in the county and beyond. The Art League counts on tax-deductible membership fees and contributions, gallery sales, and an annual gala for support. Founded in 1914, the league is run entirely by volunteers and has never had a salaried staff member. To join or learn more, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com or email [email protected].
