Gourds can be turned into fetching little decorative houses or dioramas. Learn how at a Galveston Art League workshop on Saturday, Oct. 16. Details at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.
Galveston Art League will host a workshop on Saturday Oct. 16 to teach participants how to
build gourd houses roofed with gourd seeds.
Instructor Eleanore Wuthrich has worked with gourds for 20 years. She will teach cleaning and
decorating techniques at the workshop, which costs $35 and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. at the Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. Everyone will leave with a
finished gourd house.
To register and pay, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and click on the “Events” tab
and then select “Workshops” from the drop-down menu.
Wuthrich will provide gourds, seeds to decorate the roofs, and acrylic paint. Participants are
asked to bring a glue gun, glue sticks, E6000 glue, and 1-inch and ¼-inch paintbrushes. If you
want to look for tiny objects to make a diorama (a scene with 3-D figures), so bring along small
accessories and figures, too, if you wish.
Wuthrich, a Texas City native, has taught gourd workshops for several years at the Texas
Gourd Festival and participated in workshops at the Texas and Arizona Gourd Festivals for
more than 15 years. Creating characters for all seasons is her favorite gourd passion, but she
also enjoys carving gourds and putting scenes inside of them.
Galveston Art League hosts low-cost workshops for children and adults as part of its mission to
promote visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County region. The league,
founded in 1914, is an all-volunteer organization that has never had a salaried employee on
staff.
To find out more about the league, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. Please email
[email protected] with any questions.

The gourd penguin workshop was such a hit that the instructor was drafted for a return engagement to create mini-homes.

The little fairy houses are so much fun to make - no art experience is needed to enjoy this workshop.
