Galveston Art League To Host 3 Fall Workshops From : Mary Vinnedge

Galveston Art League has scheduled three fall workshops for polishing your artistic skills ― or just so you can have a great time.
The Art League’s workshops, part of the 104-year-old organization’s mission to promote the visual arts in Galveston County and beyond, are excellent opportunities for receiving great pointers from an expert. The workshops could be a mother’s or father’s day out, bridesmaids’ activity, or an opportunity to create a unique gift. Regardless of motivation, you’ll meet artists with common interests and enjoy wonderful camaraderie during these learning-by-doing experiences.
All workshops are held at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston.
Here’s what’s coming up in the next few weeks:
Late October: In a workshop lasting three full days, Austin artist Vie Dunn-Harr (VieDunn-Harr.com), a contemporary painter who exhibits nationally and internationally, will instruct students in watercolor/collage techniques. The workshop lasts from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 26, 27, and 28 (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Bring a sack lunch or eat at a restaurant during midday meal breaks.
Workshop leader Dunn-Harr, born in San Antonio, describes her work as “organic forms rooted in architectural elements. The forms are sensuous and portray the force and fragility of nature.”
The cost for three full days of creative painting and collage is $370.     To register or to learn more, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and click on “Workshops” in the gold bar near the top of the homepage. Registration officially closes on Oct. 22, but if you miss the deadline, contact the Art League’s workshop coordinator, Susan Pinkerton, at 832-752-3280 or [email protected] and she will try to fit you in.
Mid-November: Award-winning watercolorist Jackie Liddell will teach how to create paintings using innovative line techniques from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 17. Liddell, a longtime high school art teacher, holds a master of fine arts degree. She is an Elite Signature Member of the Watercolor Art Society of Houston and is an active member of the Galveston Art League, Texas Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and National Society of Art.
Participants will need to bring watercolors (or acrylic paints that will be used like transparent watercolor) plus watercolor brushes, palette, and two sheets of watercolor paper about 11 by 15 inches (the paper will be provided if need be). Cost is $40.
Registration and additional details are available online at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com (click on “Workshops”). If you have questions, you also may email [email protected] or call Galveston Art league workshop coordinator Susan Pinkerton at 832-752-3280.
Late November: During this 3½-day workshop, Taiguruma artisan Motoyuki Noguchi of Niigata, Japan, will step participants through creation of fish carts or watermelon carts in the style of traditional Japanese folk art. All materials are provided.
No experience or special skills are required for this workshop, which will last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 26, 27, and 28, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 29. Cost is $100 for the fish cart or $80 for the watermelon cart. Plan to bring a sack lunch or dine out.
Registration and additional details are available at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com (click on “Workshops”). If you have questions, you can also contact Galveston Art League workshop coordinator Susan Pinkerton at (832) 752-3280 or [email protected]‬.
The nonprofit Galveston Art League, which offers memberships starting at $35 per year, holds classes and workshops for adults and children throughout the year. It operates galleries that showcase regional artists at 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston and 611 6th St. N. in Texas City during member shows and juried shows.
Full details about the Art League’s membership options, events, and programs are available at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com or by emailing [email protected]. The organization welcomes your support as a member, volunteer, donor, or participating artist. Contributions to the nonprofit Art League are tax-deductible.
