Nancy House, the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for July, is always up for a challenge. The Texas City artist works in varied media, and her artworks on display in the league gallery are diverse, ranging from various standalone 3-D items as well as wall-hung pieces evoking the sea. You can view her works, along with dozens of others by Art League members, from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays July 2-25 in the league gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston. Items from the show also will be for sale, with easy credit card checkout, at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com (click on “July show”). House began her creative journey while growing up along the picturesque San Juan River in Colorado. After retiring from the aerospace industry, she explored new media, including pottery, papier mâché and mixed media. Her work couples aspects of nature with whimsy. She draws inspiration from all over, from “an image on the web to a spectacular sunset – and I want to relive or recreate that inspirational moment.” And she enjoys shifting gears and pushing limits. “Some things are just a challenge, and I think, ‘Oh, I want to try that; I want to do that.’ ” When House works on a project, she’s completely immersed. “I get in the space, in the moment, and then politics, the weather, all of it, fall away.” Technical aspects, the quest to achieve a certain effect and to put dimension or movement into the image, are absorbing, House says. Most of her artistic endeavors have involved paper, “making paper and creating and teaching papier mâché. I also love clay – both throwing on the wheel and hand building. Photography has been a staple in my artistic expression, too. And there are acrylics and pastels hanging on walls that I have enjoyed painting. Most recently, I have dabbled with resin.” Her favorite media are papier mâché and clay – tactile arts, she says. House actively participates in the region’s art scene and has worked with art leagues and colleges in the greater Galveston area, teaching the techniques for papier mâché and handmade paper. She is the coordinator of the annual Texas City Art Festival, and she is on the Galveston Art League’s Board of Directors, with responsibilities for planning the league’s workshops, demonstrations, and trips near and far. House collaborated with Pat Jakobi on the book Galveston Art League: A Century of Island Art, which is for sale at the Art League’s gallery. She gives high praise to Galveston Art League for its support of her as an individual artist and the local art community as a whole. “It has been a staple in my life for over 20 years and ranks right up there with family and close friends in importance,” House says. “The Art League will benefit every artist who joins in ways that will encourage that particular person to grow in their medium. There are the nine member shows each year that provide opportunities for artists to exhibit their talent and three juried shows that allow artists to compete and excel among other artists.” Members gather monthly to see each other’s artwork and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow artists and non-artist members of the league who support the league through their tax- deductible memberships and contributions as well as purchases of members’ artworks.
