Julie Chapa, the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for January, demonstrates her love of nature in many of her photographs. About a dozen of her finely detailed images are on display and for sale from Jan. 2-24 at the front of the Art League’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, except for closing on New Year’s Day. Online shoppers may view Chapa’s photos, as well as other league members’ artwork exhibited during the organization’s January show, at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. Convenient online checkout is offered for those with credit cards, or contact [email protected] to arrange another form of payment. Curbside pickup is available, and the league will send art to out-of-region buyers with an additional delivery fee. Chapa takes pictures of a variety of subjects but is partial to birds and landscapes, often turning her focus on the diverse feathered fauna and scenes of the Texas Gulf Coast, which she loves. Her fondness for Mother Nature began in Northern Michigan, where she grew up. A self-taught award-winning photographer, she continues to improve her skills through workshops and online tutorials. “I prefer to take photos in early morning, when the light is soft and the world is just waking up,” says Chapa, who lives in Rosharon, Texas. She likes to inspire the people who see her photography “to get outside and explore new locations or recapture memories of past adventures.” In her day job, Chapa, who majored in biology at Central Michigan University, works as a medical technologist. Chapa’s work recently was accepted into the Houston PhotoFest International Juried Show, and she is a member of the Texas Photographic Society and a professional member of the Galveston Art League. The nonprofit Galveston Art League, founded in 1914, encourages all who appreciate art to join the organization. Its ranks include artists and non-artists. Run exclusively by volunteers without ever having any salaried staff members, the organization has a mission of promoting visual arts and art education in Galveston County and beyond. To learn about membership levels and fees, which start at $10 a year for students, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague and click on “Join.” Or contact a member directly at [email protected] or 940-222-1958.
