Judging the contest was Jan Harrell (www.janharrell.com), who is a metalsmith, enamellist, and educator who has been a teacher at the Glassell School of Art in Houston for nearly 30 years. Harrell also teaches workshops across the country and participates in invitational and juried exhibitions. She received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Texas Tech University and her master of fine arts degree in sculpture from the University of Houston. This was one of three juried competitions held by the Galveston Art League each year. The Art League is a 107-year-old nonprofit organization run solely by volunteers (no salaried staff members), and its mission is to enhance visual arts appreciation and art education in Galveston County and beyond. The league’s next juried competition is coming up in September. These juried shows are open to artists older than 15, and they do not have to be Galveston Art League members. The Art League welcomes non-artists as well as artists as members. Members receive discounts to the league exhibits, which change monthly; they also are invited to exclusive preview parties each month when the new exhibits debut in the gallery. To learn how you may join or to find out more about the league, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com or email [email protected]. A schedule of league activities, including low-cost workshops that will resume this summer and are open to the public, will be listed on the website – so check back in late May. The website also has information about the league’s May 23 fundraiser gala at historic Garten Verein in Galveston, with online ticket sales.
