Galveston Art League has launched a new website with a bold design, enhanced features, and
simplified navigation. Online shopping has improved, displaying larger images of the artwork for sale in monthly exhibits, plus an easy checkout procedure. The website address has stayed the same -- www.GalvestonArtLeague.com – but now it’s responsive, meaning that the site’s content adjusts for optimum viewing on any device, from the smallest smartphone to the biggest desktop computer. “We wanted to make the new website more functional and informative for both first-time visitors and longtime members,” Art League webmaster Fontaine Jacobs says. “The new site does an excellent job of telling people what we do and how to join. If you have a question, you’ll find the answer quickly or with just a click, you can email us for the information you need. “Our member artists are already loving the bigger pictures that show off their artwork. And the website has details about the many events we offer to our members and to the public, including educational workshops for kids and adults, travel, ArtWalks, and our annual fundraiser gala. We have to issue a big thank you to our volunteer web designer Sara Lohr.” Art League Vice President Pat Jakobi points out that “we’re always encouraging folks to become members, and it’s a simple process to join by using our website now – you don’t even have to leave your couch to join. Membership gives artists a place to exhibit throughout the year, which is really a help to the area’s emerging artists. And non-artists and artists alike enjoy the parties that provide a preview of the 12 annual exhibits, early-bird shopping, and a chance to chat with local artists.” Galveston Art League, established in 1914 to promote visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County area, also has updated its logo recently, further adding to the nonprofit organization’s new look. The league’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St., typically debuts its exhibits the first weekend of each month; the virtual gallery at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com posts the same items for sale. Nine months a year the holds shows that are limited to works by members; all of these pieces are for sale. During February, May and September, the league sponsors juried shows, which are judged competitions (with cash awards) that attract entries from member and nonmember artists in and beyond the region. All year long, the gallery sells small 3-D art of various types, such as jewelry and pens made of exotic woods, in two large glass showcases. The Galveston Art League is an all-volunteer organization that has never had a salaried staff member. Volunteers comprise its board of directors, handle the website, and staff the gallery, which is open from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays. (The gallery adheres to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for Covid-19 prevention, so masks are currently required.) The league finances its activities through proceeds from its annual gala; tax-deductible contributions; gallery sales; and workshop, contest, and tax-deductible membership fees. In addition, the gallery receives a small share of hotel occupancy tax revenues to boost its marketing budget. “Galveston Art League is an important component of Galveston’s thriving art community,” Jakobi says, “and the new website gives us new capabilities for supporting visual arts. We hope everyone reading this will visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and try out the new website. The new site has been in the works for over a year, and we’re very excited now that it’s up and running. If anyone has a suggestion on how to make it even better, please email us at [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you.”
