The World Needs Christmas
Matthew 1:20-22 An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said; “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save His people from their sins.”
I continue to use the phrase “God has a plan” more now than ever because I don’t pretend to understand the chaotic way the world around me continues to spiral. You don’t have to look very long or far to find conflict or sadness these days. You cannot digest news of any media without being confronted with the brokenness of the world. But really there is nothing new; for centuries people have been searching to find meaning in our fractured society.
The good news is that since the original mishap with Eve and the fruit, (I know, Adam was there too) God’s plan has been to restore the brokenness and chaos in the world. His plan is to clean up the mess that we’ve left and heal the wounds that we have given ourselves and each other. Christmas is the celebration of the completion of the plan of restoration; the very name of Jesus, “The Lord Saves,” gives us freedom from being consumed by the chaos. “For He will save His people from their sins.” We need the message of Christmas now more than ever.
So when you say “Jesus is the reason for the season” this year, may you truly understand that His very nature is of love and restoration. We can have confidence in His plan and not in the world. The world needs this message; your neighbor needs this message; your family needs this message. We live in a crazy world; but God has a plan, and Jesus completes that plan.
We celebrate the gift of Jesus because He’s a gift we desperately needed. He’s also the gift we desperately need to give.
