Create a penguin at a Galveston Art League gourd workshop on June 26

How would you like to have a pet penguin, no care and feeding necessary? Here’s your chance: The
Galveston Art League will host a workshop instructing participants about cleaning and preparing gourds
to craft, and then each student will paint a gourd to resemble a penguin. At the conclusion of the
workshop, which is open to the public, attendees should leave with their finished penguins.
Eleanore Wuthrich, a Texas City native, will lead the workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June
26, at the Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. Cost is $40.
Wuthrich, who has crafted with gourds for 20 years, will teach safety tips as well as the artistry of
transforming a curvy gourd into a perky penguin or other character. She has taught workshops for
several years at the Texas Gourd Festival and participated in workshops at the Texas and Arizona Gourd
Festivals for more than 15 years.
Most supplies for the penguin workshop are included in the workshop fee: gourds of various shapes,
acrylic paint, and some decorating accessories. Wuthrich asks participants to bring the following
workshop tools and products if possible, although she will have extras on hand for participants who
don’t have the items: quarter-inch, five-eighths-inch, and 1-inch-wide paintbrushes; a pencil; a heat gun
or hair dryer to speed up drying of paint; an apron, if desired; and a mask to protect from gourd dust if
gourds are cut open.
This is the first Galveston Art League workshop to be offered since the onset of the pandemic. Seating
will be limited, and you may register and pay with a credit card at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. If you
have questions, please email [email protected].
The Galveston Art League is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization founded in 1914; it has never had a
salaried staff member. The league’s mission is to nurture visual arts and art education in Galveston
County and beyond. Workshops are one of the ways that the Art League carries out its mission.
Galveston Art League is welcoming new members, both artists and non-artists, right now. Members are
invited to exclusive preview parties when exhibits change each month. Artist members have an
additional benefit: reduced fees to exhibit in the gallery. To find out more about tax-deductible
memberships at various levels, click on “Join” at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.

It's great spreading that you are spreading the word that the Galveston Art League is hosting workshops again. This one is fun. I could definitely see that penguin becoming part of my Christmas decorations.

This will be a fun workshop and everyone will leave with a completed penguin. The cost is very reasonable.
