Community Service Award by Mayor Jason Tabor “Thank you for being here. Community service and volunteering is important to any community. For this reason, a Community Service Award was developed to honor persons or groups who are making a significant contribution to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication. The honoree or honorees serve as a role model for compassion, and service and strive to make the world a better place. They have with a sincere heart and passion to help others. They uplift their community through the famous quote of Mahatma Ghandi, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” The group being honored today is being recognized for their selfless giving and heroic hearts to serving others. They have gone above and beyond of the average citizen. In May of this year, they served over 300 people by cooking crawfish at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Annual Bazar. On the Anniversary of the Santa Fe Memorial at the Galveston County Fairgrounds, they provided meals for over 500 families. During the Santa Fe Tribal Tune Up for Santa Fe Seniors at The Hidden Palms in June, they served over 250 students and their parents. At the Santa Fe Community Potluck at Runge Park in June, they served over 300 citizens of Santa Fe. In October, they traveled to College Station to support a nonprofit organization and served over 300 families. And most recently, during Heritage Festival in collaboration with the Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony in November, they served over 500 Veteran families and guests. As Mayor of Santa Fe, it is my privilege and honor to recognize the following individuals for their dedication and servant leadership to making our community a better place. Juan Leija, Ruben Leija, Frank Leija, Jesse Leija, Fidencio Leija, Juanito Leija, Stephen Saltzmann, Juan Garza, and Erik Garza. This group of individuals is what makes our community and City of Santa Fe a place we all want to live. Help me in honoring Team Leija Cookers with the Community Service Award for feeding over 2,000 people in 2019. Your contributions do not go unrecognized and we are grateful to having you as part of our family and our City of Santa Fe.”
