Leroy LeFlore’s painting, “Seawall Pelicans at Mardi Gras,” won Best of Show in a recent Galveston Art League competition.
The Galveston Art League reminds artists that they may drop off their entries for the organization’s Winter 2020 Juried Show between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, at 2117A Postoffice St., Galveston. (To make an appointment to drop off your art early – between 3 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 – call 409-682-3515.)
The judge for this show is Houston artist Diane Brahm, who studied at the University of Texas in Austin. Brahm has won numerous awards in regional and national shows, been published in national art magazines, and is represented by several galleries. She teaches art at a suburban school in the Houston area and also holds workshops for school-aged children through adults. She has served on the boards of Houston Civic Arts Association, Houston Art Society, and West Houston Area Artists. Please visit www.DianeBrahm.com to learn more about her and her work.
The Galveston Art League’s winter competition is open to any artist (membership in the Art League is not required) 15 and older. Artists may submit up to three works in any medium.
The five judged categories will be: 1) work on canvas or panel, 2) work on paper, 3) photography, 4) mixed media/wall-hung (such as collage, fiber and assemblage), and 5) 3-D, free-standing (such as sculpture, art dolls, pottery, porcelain, glass, wood, metal and assemblage). The work must have been created within the past four years and cannot have been previously accepted into a juried show at the Galveston Art League.
Artwork that is accepted in the show must remain at the gallery throughout the length of the Juried Show, Jan. 30-Feb. 23.Artists whose works are declined for use in the show will be called Jan. 28 and 29. They may pick up those works from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 30-31.
The Art League will host a reception and awards presentation from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb.  1. The artist whose work is awarded Best of Show will receive $300. First place in each category is a $100 award; second place is $50. With the exception of “Best of Show,” no award will be given in any category that has fewer than six accepted entries.
Nonrefundable entry fees for this juried competition are $15 each for first two entries and $5 for a third for Art League members. The cost is $20 per entry for nonmembers.
For further details and entry forms, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com; the black sidebar on the homepage has information such as requirements for hanging hardware and special handling for large-size framed works.
To become a member and receive a discount on entry fees and other perks, visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and click on “Join.”
Membership fees contribute to the operating budget of the Galveston Art League, a nonprofit organization founded in 1914 to promote visual arts and support art education throughout the greater Galveston County region. The all-volunteer organization has never had a salaried staff member. You need not be an artist to join. For more information, email gallery2117@gmail.com.
