Rotary Club of Texas City is with Higher Up Texas. Rotarians Making a Difference in the Community Hillary DiRenzo Gramm, CEO of Higher Up Texas, "officially" received the van keys from Gary Scoggins, President of the Rotary Club of Texas City. Scoggins is pictured with club members, Texas City Commissioners Thelma Bowie and Jami Clark. Here is the story of Velma the VUS, as she is affectionately named. In late 2022, the HUTs were asked for their ideas about what was needed for the organization. Jordan Schwertz and Matthew Catching both suggested that we needed our own form of transportation. Together, we wrote a grant proposal to the William Stamps Farish Fund, and they gifted us the first third of the money needed to purchase a 15-passenger van. With their thinking hats on, the HUTs thought creatively about how the next portion of funds would be raised. They wrote and acted out a commercial during the 2023 HUT Honors. At this point, the community was rallying for this van! The Rotary Club of Texas City learned of this need and supported it by contributing the final portion needed to purchase the van. “Velma the VUS,” as she is affectionately named, has been embraced by all and has become a source of transportation for expanding our experiences.
