This street is named Clarence Wood Drive, in honor of Texas City's first paid firefighter. Clarence was a hero from his earliest days. At just 18 years old, he was in the trenches in France, serving in the United States military in World War I, when he was hospitalized with the Spanish Flu. Upon being told he was going to be sent home, Clarence left the hospital and walked back to his comrades, rejoining them in the trenches. After the war, he got married, had five children and moved to Texas City, joining the Texas City Fire Department. In 1930, he became the City's first paid firefighter. It was not an easy job. Clarence was on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and he and his family lived in the fire station. On the morning of April 16, 1947, he and fellow firefighters responded to a fire aboard the SS Grandcamp, a 437-foot-long former Liberty Ship that had been assigned to the French Line following World War II to assist with the rebuilding of France. At approximately 9:12 a.m., under tremendous heat and pressure, the SS Grandcamp exploded, causing massive destruction and loss of life, including Clarence and twenty-six of his fellow Texas City firefighters. During the grand opening ceremony, we were honored to have Clarence's family members join us as we remember our past and celebrate our future. Tired of The Same Mosquito Problem Every Year?!
