· ”And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.“ Luke 4:13 ESV Jesus faced some tremendous temptations in the, wilderness, and came through unscathed. But as Satan left without accomplishing his desire, it didn’t mean he gave up. Just as it says in this passage, “he departed from him until an opportune time.” The devil never quits, he never declares God’s people off limits, he just sets in wait to see if he can catch us with our guards down. He is looking for those who isolate themselves from others who will support and encourage them. He is looking for those who are dabbling in areas of temptation. He is looking for those who begin seeking answers in false gods and false belief systems. In other words, he is looking for some of the people you know. The key message, or perhaps warning, that we should get from this passage is that the devil never gives up He is watching and waiting for the opportune time to mess up our lives. So if he is watching and waiting for us, what should we be doing? I guess we could spend all our time like sentries who are solely focused on watching for the enemy, but I don’t know if that is the real answer. Maybe the answer is two-fold; first and foremost we should be keeping our eyes on Christ, following in his footsteps to a place of safety. And we should also become familiar enough with scripture that we can rely on it for the wisdom we need to defend against the attacks that are sure to come. Christ is willing and able to be our ever present help, but it is up to us to allow him to be our strength and our help. Pastor Tim Franklin
