William R. Powell is with Barbara Powell
Alvin Music Festival and Cook-Off.
  · Alvin  ·
Texas Select Seasonings company cook off team consisting of Rick Cantu, Sam Allen and myself are BACK smoking up Texas Select BBQ!
We had a blast competing in our first cook off this year against a stacked field of 191 teams at CBA sanctioned Alvin Music Festival. Friday we turned in fajitas and steak then on Saturday we rolled smoke on chicken, ribs, pork butt and brisket. We were happy with all of our entries using TSS original rubs and glazes plus we rolled out the new Sweet Ass BBQ rub and Rooter Rub.
We were blessed to hear our song play a couple times and walked that big stage. Basic Beef and Texas Chili Pequin with a finishing dust of ground Rustic Rub teamed up for our top walk of the weekend, a 1st place H-E-B prime ribeye, BOOM!!
The winning steak was grilled on an Oklahoma Joe's Smokers Rambler and killed it on the Friday night fajitas also.

Our second highest call was a 4th place chicken grilled on a custom built drum from Top Notch Weldz, a 13th fajita then after all our other meats were totaled we heard our song once again for the top ten teams as we finished 6th overall, Yeeeee Haaaaw!! Big
congrats
to GC, RGC and everyone that heard their song played. It was great to see so many of our friends and fellow BBQ cooks.
For “a taste as bold as Texas” be sure and check out our compete line of backyard and competition Texas BBQ rubs, glazes and salsa at our website www.texasselectseasonings.com or visit our retail store in Hitchcock.

THE HISTORY OF Beer Mugs

3/26/2023

Picture
Do you ever wonder who first thought of Beer Mugs?
It’s thought that our ancient ancestors first drank beer out of animal skins over 10,000 years ago.
By 9,000 B.C.E., terracotta pots, bowls, and jugs were being used to drink beer. Around the 14th century, tankards and steins began to be used for beer drinking. In fact, these were the first drinking vessels to be associated specifically with beer. Tankards were originally made of wood and bound with iron or leather.
They started out as containers for carrying water but soon became associated with beer drinking.
After the Bubonic plague, the tankard changed, morphing into a tall, single-handled pewter mug with a lid.
This new type of lidded drinking container was meant to keep the contents free of germs and became known as a stein.
(Unfortunately, the pewter material posed a risk of lead poisoning.)
Beer glasses first became popular in the 19th century and by the 20th century, various types of glassware designed specifically for beer were emerging, including the 10-sided or fluted pint mug, which featured a handle designed to keep a person's hands off the glass itself so that the beer inside would stay cooler for longer.
In response to the growing popularity of amber beers, the 1940s saw the invention of the dimpled glass.
A straight glass with a slight bulge at the top known as the “Nonik” (no nick) glass was invented shortly after; it was designed to minimize chipping.
The thin-walled pint glass was developed soon after that and still serves as the classic Irish/Guinness pint glass today.
Modern beer mugs are almost always made of glass and come in a variety of styles.
Each one is designed to have a specific effect on the beer inside it and consequently, certain glasses are considered the optimal way to enjoy specific types of beer.

THE HISTORY OF Classical Guitars

3/26/2023

Picture
TODAY'S OBJECT
Do you ever wonder who first thought of Classical Guitars?
Historians think that the classical guitar may have originated in ancient Egypt. This assumption is based on a depiction of a plucked string instrument that closely resembles a guitar; it appears in a piece of ancient Egyptian art that dates back to around 3,000 B.C. It’s thought that the depicted instrument existed in some form and later spread around the world.
Around the turn of the 15th century, a different plucked string instrument appeared in Spain; it was called the vihuela and featured four double-strings.
A five double-string version of the instrument appeared around 1600 and a six single-string version showed up in Europe in the 1800s.
This six-stringed instrument is considered the direct ancestor of today’s classical guitar and is often referred to as the “19th-century guitar.”
These 19th-century guitars varied in shape and size but were generally on the smaller side and designed to be played quietly.
Spanish guitar maker Antonio de Torres became the father of the modern guitar when he created a larger version capable of producing a louder sound.
He also extended the length of the strings and both widened and extended the body, creating the very first version of the modern classical guitar.
Other guitar makers then copied Torres’ modifications and the new instrument spread and became quite and popular.
Over time, additional updates were made, giving rise to the classical guitar that we are familiar with today.
