“I have to take a moment to brag on the League City Police Department’s officers that participate in the Bigs In Blue mentoring program through Gulf Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters. They are consistent, kind, and full of life and humor... all the things that our students who are struggling with deep and troubling issues need! Not only do these giving officers spend time playing games and hanging out with our students, they develop real relationships with their mentees that will surely leave lifelong imprints.
Someone special to mention is Silvio Vincenzo. He has gone above and beyond his role with the Bigs in Blue program. Since he has the time as well as the desire to work with children, he has been paired with three other students, and now volunteers with Communities In Schools approximately 3 hours per week.
In addition to mentoring, the League City PD also hosts the Blue Santa holiday gift program which is championed by Christy Galyean and Todd Young. Even when parents have been fearful to answer the phone because they fear the Police calling them, these officers make sure to validate the feelings of the families and to put them at ease. They make the families feel important and let them know that they are only there to help, and not to bring trouble to the family.
We have seen great strides and much growth in the students with whom the officers have been working. Though the growth can be difficult to measure, the smiles on the student's faces are evident that their presence is important. And the commitment that the officers have shown to our school has been second to none, and we are privileged to call this team friends!”
