The Lady of Stonewall Creek

"The Lady of Stonewall Creek"

Just outside of Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country flows Stonewall Creek, named for the limestone formations that line its banks.
Since the 1940s, locals have spoken of a woman in a flowing white dress who appears near the water's edge during spring storms.

The tale traces back to April 1942, when Eleanor Richter was to marry her fiancé before he left for war.
On the night before their wedding, unprecedented rains caused the creek to flood. Eleanor received word that her fiancé's family was stranded on the other side, and she attempted to cross the swollen waters to reach them.
The current proved too strong, and Eleanor was swept away.

Three days later, her body was found downstream, still clutching her wedding veil. Since then, whenever spring storms bring heavy rain to the creek, witnesses report seeing a young woman in white walking along the water's edge, sometimes attempting to cross before disappearing into the mist.
Local families claim the Lady of Stonewall Creek isn't malevolent—she appears to warn travelers of dangerous water crossings.
Several families credit their survival of flash floods to heeding the apparition's silent warning.
Some say if you listen closely during a thunderstorm, you can hear her humming a wedding march beneath the sound of rainfall.
