Galveston & Brazoria County anglers have plenty of water to explore — and flounder are a favorite target GALVESTON & BRAZORIA COUNTIES, TEXAS -- If your idea of a perfect weekend involves a fishing rod, a little saltwater, and the possibility of bringing home something delicious for dinner, it may be time to GO FISHIN’!🎣 Along the Texas Gulf Coast, anglers in Galveston and Brazoria counties have access to an incredible network of bays, channels, marshes, passes and shoreline habitat. And one fish that continues to get plenty of attention from coastal anglers is the southern flounder. These flat, camouflaged fish are built for ambush. Southern flounder spend much of their time lying on the bottom, blending into mud and other surroundings while waiting for shrimp, small fish and other prey to come within striking distance. So grab the tackle box, check the weather and tides, and let's talk FLOUNDER! 🐟 WHY FLOUNDER ARE SO MUCH FUN TO CATCH Flounder fishing is different from chasing many other Texas saltwater species. You're not necessarily looking for a fish cruising across the surface. You're looking for bottom structure, moving water and places where bait is likely to travel. Texas Parks & Wildlife Department notes that flounder can be caught around areas including channels, jetties, oyster reefs, rocky areas, pilings, marsh points and other locations where food concentrates. For Galveston and Brazoria County anglers, that means there are plenty of places worth exploring. 🎯 THINK BOTTOM! When you're targeting flounder, keep your presentation close to the bottom. Soft plastics, shrimp imitations and other small artificial lures can be productive. Live shrimp, mud minnows and mullet are also among the baits recommended by TPWD. A slow presentation can be the key. Don't race the bait across the bottom. Work it. Pause it. Let it sit. Then move it again. That flat fish sitting down there may be waiting for exactly that opportunity. 🌊 WHERE SHOULD YOU LOOK?GALVESTON BAY Galveston Bay is an enormous and diverse fishing playground, with shallow flats, marsh habitat, channels and oyster reefs. TPWD describes Texas coastal bays as having broad shallow mud flats, seagrass habitat and oyster reefs that support an extensive food web. For flounder anglers, those kinds of environments are worth paying attention to. CHANNELS & PASSES As the year progresses toward fall, flounder behavior becomes particularly interesting. TPWD says adult flounder migrate from the bays toward the Gulf in the fall to spawn, with channels and passes leading toward the Gulf becoming important areas during the migration. That means the coming months can be an exciting time for anglers who have flounder on their fishing list. BRAZORIA COUNTY Don't forget about the southern end of the Texas Gulf Coast. Brazoria County offers an incredible mixture of bay, marsh and tidal environments where anglers can explore different types of coastal habitat. The trick is learning your water. Watch the tide. Watch the bait. Watch the water movement. Then put your bait where the fish are likely to be. 🎣 WHAT SHOULD YOU THROW?You don't need a giant setup to go after flounder. TPWD recommends relatively light tackle, noting that spinning or baitcasting tackle with roughly 12–14 pound test can be used. Try: 🎣 Soft plastic shrimp imitations 🎣 Jerk shads 🎣 Swimming grubs 🎣 Small jigs 🎣 Live shrimp 🎣 Mud minnows 🎣 Mullet The important thing is getting the presentation down where the flounder are looking for food. 🌙 AND IF YOU'RE A NIGHT FISHERMAN...That's where flounder fishing gets really interesting. Floundering has traditionally been associated with nighttime trips into shallow water, particularly when conditions provide good visibility. But safety comes first. Stingrays also frequent shallow areas and can be difficult to distinguish from a flounder in the water. TPWD specifically warns anglers to be cautious when wading and to make absolutely certain what they've encountered before attempting to retrieve a fish. Wear appropriate footwear, carry a light, watch your footing and never assume that every flat shape on the bottom is a flounder. ⚠️ BEFORE YOU KEEP THAT FLOUNDER — KNOW THE RULES! This is extremely important because Texas flounder regulations are changing with the new license year. For the 2025–26 regulations, the flounder fishery has a 5-fish daily bag limit, a 15-inch minimum length, no maximum length limit, and a closed season from November 1 through December 14. The regulations for the 2026–27 season, beginning September 1, 2026, continue with a 5-fish daily bag limit, 15-inch minimum length and no maximum length, with the fishery closed November 1 through December 14. The possession limit is equal to the daily bag. And remember: recreational anglers must have the appropriate Texas fishing license with a saltwater endorsementwhen landing fish from Texas saltwater. Always check the current Texas Parks & Wildlife regulations before heading out, especially around September 1 when the new regulation year begins. 🗓️ THE BIG FLOUNDER RUN IS COMING Here's the exciting part. While you can catch flounder at other times of year, TPWD identifies October through December as the traditional period for the fall migration toward the Gulf. That means we're getting closer. As cooler weather begins moving across the Texas coast, anglers start watching the water, temperatures, tides and channels for signs that the flounder migration is underway. And when that happens? It's time to go fishing! 🏖️ GALVESTON + BRAZORIA = A FISHERMAN'S PLAYGROUND One of the best things about living along this part of the Texas coast is that you don't have to drive hundreds of miles to find an adventure.  🐦 Sharing the Shore: Houston Audubon’s 2026 Beach-Nesting Bird Season Highlights the Challenges Facing Texas Coastal Birds Along the Texas Gulf Coast, summer means sunshine, warm Gulf waters, fishing, beach trips and family vacations. But for some of our smallest coastal residents, these same stretches of sand are also something much more important: They’re nurseries. Throughout the 2026 nesting season, Houston Audubon has been working to monitor and protect beach-nesting birds while helping Texans understand how something as simple as giving wildlife a little extra room can make a tremendous difference. One of the people spending his summer on the front lines of that effort is Isaac, Houston Audubon’s Beach-Nesting Birds Technician. ☀️ A Summer Spent Watching Over Coastal Birds While thousands of people headed toward the Gulf to enjoy the beach this summer, Isaac headed out for a different reason. Through the intense Texas heat, he has been surveying and monitoring nesting birds and gathering information that helps conservationists better understand what these birds experience while attempting to successfully raise their young. The work is especially important because beach-nesting birds face an unusual challenge: their nesting grounds are often the exact same places people love to recreate. Nests, eggs and young birds can be remarkably difficult to see against sand and shells. That makes awareness especially important when visiting nesting areas. Houston Audubon encourages beachgoers to respect posted nesting areas, observe birds from a distance and help minimize disturbances. 🌊 But People Aren't the Only Challenge Human disturbance is one of the significant threats facing nesting birds, but the 2026 season offered a powerful reminder that conservation teams cannot control everything. According to Houston Audubon, a recent coastal storm resulted in the loss of many eggs and fledglings from known nesting areas. For birds already dealing with predators, weather, extreme temperatures and human activity, a major coastal weather event can quickly change the outcome of an entire nesting area. It also demonstrates why reducing the threats that we can control becomes so important. We can't stop a storm from reaching the Texas coast. But we can decide how we behave when we visit it. 🏖️ “Share the Shore”That idea is at the heart of Houston Audubon's message. A day at the beach doesn't have to come at the expense of wildlife. Beach visitors can help by keeping their distance from nesting birds, respecting ropes and posted nesting areas, keeping pets properly controlled, avoiding disturbing flocks and teaching children why these birds need room. If birds begin calling repeatedly, flying around you or behaving defensively, that may be a sign you've gotten too close to a nest or young bird. Moving farther away can make a difference. 🐣 Nesting Season May Be Ending — The Mission Isn'tAs the 2026 nesting season approaches its conclusion, Houston Audubon's work doesn't simply end with it. Monitoring is only one part of the mission. Education, habitat conservation, advocacy and public awareness continue throughout the year. And that work matters tremendously here on the Upper Texas Coast, which sits along one of North America's major migratory corridors and provides habitat for an extraordinary variety of resident and migratory birds. Houston Audubon manages and protects thousands of acres of bird habitat across the region while working to create a healthier environment for birds and people. ❤️ One Technician — and a Much Bigger Mission It's easy to look at someone walking a Texas beach with binoculars or monitoring equipment and never realize what's happening behind the scenes. But every survey contributes information. Every protected nesting area gives birds another opportunity. Every beach visitor who chooses to give a nesting bird more room becomes part of the solution. And every person who learns why these birds matter helps spread a conservation message far beyond one nesting season. Galveston’s Beloved Tall Ship Returns After Historic 5,000-Mile Voyage Crowds Line Galveston’s Waterfront as the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA Completes a Remarkable Journey Representing Texas During America’s 250th Anniversary GALVESTON, TEXAS -- There are few sights more closely connected to Galveston than the towering masts and unmistakable silhouette of the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA. On Saturday, August 15, that familiar silhouette finally appeared on the horizon again. ELISSA is home. After a history-making journey of approximately 5,000 miles over 66 days, Galveston’s beloved sailing ship returned to her home port Saturday following an extraordinary voyage representing Galveston and the State of Texas during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. Crowds gathered along the Seawall, Ship Channel and waterfront before welcoming ELISSA back at Pier 21. For Galveston, it was much more than the return of a ship. It was the return of a piece of the island itself. 🇺🇸 GALVESTON SAILED INTO AMERICA’S 250TH CELEBRATION ELISSA departed Galveston in June for one of the most ambitious voyages she has undertaken in decades. The journey was part of the nationwide Sail250 celebrations commemorating America's semiquincentennial. Along the way, ELISSA visited Pensacola, Savannah, New York City and Boston, joining historic tall ships and military vessels from around the world. One of the biggest moments came in New York Harbor during the Fourth of July celebration, where ELISSA led the Class A tall ships participating in Sail250. She later sailed into Boston Harbor with 18 of her 19 sails set. Imagine that sight. A ship constructed in 1877, under nearly full sail in 2026, representing Texas during one of the largest maritime celebrations in modern American history. 🌊 MORE THAN 5,000 MILES — AND SOME INCREDIBLE MOMENTS The numbers alone are impressive. Approximately 5,000 miles. 66 days. Multiple historic American ports. Eight officers and staff members. 34 trained volunteers. But numbers don't completely tell this story. During the journey, ELISSA reportedly reached nearly 14 knots while rounding Cape Hatteras, sailed among whales near Cape Cod, participated in New York's Fourth of July festivities and anchored near historic Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. For the volunteers and crew aboard, it was a rare opportunity to experience a piece of maritime history the way sailors experienced it generations ago. ⚓ AND SHE DID IT AT 149 YEARS OLD That's what makes this accomplishment even more remarkable. ELISSA was built in Scotland in 1877. She began life as a commercial cargo vessel, traveling the world and carrying freight between ports. And she actually has a historic connection to Galveston that predates her modern life here. ELISSA called at Galveston twice during the 1880s, loading cotton from the booming Texas port. Nearly a century later, her story could easily have ended. Instead, Galveston saved her. ❤️ GALVESTON REFUSED TO LET ELISSA DISAPPEAR By the 1970s, the once-proud sailing vessel had been dramatically altered and eventually ended up facing destruction in a Greek scrapyard. The Galveston Historical Foundation acquired ELISSA in 1978 and began an enormous restoration effort. By 1982, something extraordinary had happened. A vessel that might have disappeared forever had been transformed back into a functioning tall ship capable of sailing again. Today, ELISSA is both a National Historic Landmark and the Official Tall Ship of Texas. Even more remarkably, she remains one of only a handful of historic ships of her type still actively sailing. 🚢 NOT A REPLICA. NOT JUST A MUSEUM. That's something visitors sometimes don't fully appreciate. ELISSA isn't a modern reproduction made to look old. She is the real thing. Her iron hull dates to the 19th century. And while she's a floating museum when docked at the Galveston Historic Seaport, ELISSA remains an operational sailing vessel. Volunteers train in traditional seamanship, learning how to maintain and operate the complicated network of wood, wire and rope aboard a square-rigged sailing ship. ELISSA's main mast rises 99 feet above the deck. Those volunteers aren't simply historical reenactors. They're helping keep an authentic piece of maritime technology alive. 🌟 GALVESTON'S FLOATING AMBASSADOR During this summer's voyage, ELISSA wasn't simply representing herself. Everywhere those sails appeared, they carried the name GALVESTON, TEXAS with them. Galveston Historical Foundation Interim Executive Director Will Wright described her return as a proud moment for both Galveston and Texas, emphasizing that the voyage demonstrated what generations of stewardship, seamanship and dedicated volunteers have made possible. That may be the greatest significance of this voyage. For 66 days, one of Galveston's most recognizable landmarks became a traveling ambassador for the island. 👏 AND THEN GALVESTON GOT TO SAY: WELCOME HOME After thousands of miles at sea, the final few miles may have been among the most emotional. People gathered Saturday to watch ELISSA make her way home. The ship passed back into familiar Galveston waters before returning to the historic waterfront where generations of visitors have walked her decks. For the crew, volunteers, families and supporters who followed this journey, the moment marked the end of an extraordinary adventure. For everyone else on the island, it was a chance to say: Welcome home. 🎂 NEXT STOP: ELISSA TURNS 150And ELISSA's story isn't finished. In 2027, she will celebrate her 150th birthday. Galveston Historical Foundation says public tours are expected to resume later in August, with additional day sails planned as the organization builds toward that major anniversary. When the original movie arrived in theaters in 1980, critics weren't exactly kind. But something funny happened. People kept loving the music. Over time, the film developed a passionate cult following, and decades later writer Douglas Carter Beane adapted the story into a stage musical that leaned directly into the absurdity and charm of the original. The result surprised a lot of people. Xanadu opened on Broadway in 2007 and earned four Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. A movie once dismissed by critics had reinvented itself as a successful Broadway musical. If that isn't a story about following your dreams despite what everybody else says, we don't know what is. 🎭 Houston Talent Takes Center Stage The Garden Theatre's production is especially worth celebrating because the cast is filled with local professional performers. Kristen Herink leads the production as Clio/Kira, joined by Miles Estes as Sonny Malone and Brad Goertz as Danny Maguire. The cast also includes Morgan Kaupert as Melpomene, Arianna Bermudez as Calliope, Christopher Aviles as Terpsicore, Tristan Flores as Thalia, Sia Kuresa as Euterpe and Erin Marie Lamb as Erato. Snow Adeera and Elliot Schein round out the company as swings. Behind the scenes, Logan Vaden directs, with Jake Cummings serving as music director and Courtney Chiltonhandling choreography. Nicholas White leads technical direction and scenic design, with Jacob Zammaripa designing lighting, Sami Denton designing costumes, Sara Denton serving as assistant director and stage manager, and Sloane Teagle as production manager. It's a production built by Houston-area theater professionals bringing Broadway-sized imagination to a local stage. ❤️ Why We Love Shows Like This There's something especially refreshing about a musical that understands theater doesn't always have to be heavy. Sometimes you want to leave the real world outside for a couple of hours. You want to laugh. You want great music. You want ridiculous characters. You want romance. And apparently sometimes you need Greek goddesses on roller skates trying to open a roller disco in 1980s California. Xanadu delivers exactly that kind of escape.
