“Why Duolingo Is ‘Taking Over’ Former Hooters Buildings — And What It Means”

⭐ “Why Duolingo Is ‘Taking Over’ Former Hooters Buildings — And What It Means”
By Bay Area Entertainer

Something strange — and downright hilarious — has been popping up at shuttered Hooters locations across the United States:
enormous green signs declaring that Duolingo is
“coming soon.”

For the past few weeks, locals from Texas to Missouri have snapped photos of vacant Hooters restaurants suddenly covered in banners featuring Duo, the brand’s infamous green owl, creating a wave of viral confusion. But despite the rumors, the world’s most aggressive language-learning mascot isn’t opening restaurants, bars, or study halls inside old wing joints.
This entire phenomenon is a brilliant, chaotic, and entirely on-brand Duolingo marketing stunt — and it’s working flawlessly.

🦉 Why Duolingo Chose Hooters Buildings

At first glance, the connection between a language-learning app and a sports-bar restaurant chain seems random.
But there’s a clever reason behind the takeover:

1. Both Brands Use an Owl Hooters’ long-time mascot is an owl, and of course, Duo is an owl.
So when Hooters began closing dozens of locations across the country after filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024, what did Duolingo see?

“Empty nests.”
In Duolingo’s own words:
“Duo has always had a flair for drama.
When he spotted empty nests around the country, he did what any overly ambitious owl might do: leave a few feathers and see who noticed.”

And oh, people noticed.

📢 A Marketing Stunt Built for Viral Reaction

Duolingo is famous for its wild, theatrical marketing style — from its TikTok antics to mascot pranks, pop-ups, and meme-heavy campaigns.
This newest stunt takes that strategy to the physical world.

What They Did

  • Identified closed Hooters buildings in key states
  • Wrapped them in massive “Duolingo Coming Soon” banners
  • Teased the public without clarification
  • Let social media do the rest

The result?

Thousands of shares.
Hundreds of local news stories.

Endless speculation.

And millions of people suddenly talking about Duolingo — without Duolingo spending traditional ad money.

🏚️ Why Closed Hooters Locations Made Perfect TargetsHooters’ closures created a perfect storm:
  • Highly visible corner-lot buildings
  • Recognizable architecture
  • Large, easy-to-wrap signage areas
  • Strong nostalgic association
  • Existing owl-themed branding
For Duolingo, it was essentially a marketer’s playground — a stage already set for mischief.

🛍️ So… Is Duolingo Opening Real Stores?
Not yet.
The banners on old Hooters buildings are 100% temporary and part of a coordinated media stunt.

However…
Duolingo has been experimenting with physical pop-ups and real-world experiences.
They’ve even created themed spaces in cities like Pittsburgh — including a Duolingo Taqueria.

Their long-term strategy?

To turn Duo into a pop-culture icon as recognizable as Pikachu or the Geico gecko.

So while these specific “takeovers” won’t become real locations, Duolingo is exploring physical expansions in the future — immersive spaces, events, mascots, and interactive installations.

🔮 What Could Become Available If Duolingo Ever Opened a Real Location?
While hypothetical, Duolingo’s brand direction suggests exciting possibilities:

✨ Potential Real-World Concepts

  • Interactive learning cafés
  • Language-themed escape rooms
  • Pop-up “practice zones” with challenges
  • Mascot meet-and-greets
  • Global food experiences tied to languages
  • Gamified study lounges
  • Themed merchandise shops
Given their dramatic marketing style, any physical Duolingo location would likely be colorful, chaotic, and wildly photogenic.

🎤 The Viral Takeover:

A Win for Both Duolingo & Hooters
Interestingly, many marketing analysts note this stunt also helps Hooters by:
  • Bringing attention to closed properties
  • Creating renewed conversation about the brand
  • Helping local landlords attract new tenants

A playful win-win.

⭐ Final Word Duolingo hasn’t bought Hooters buildings.
Duo isn’t launching a wing-and-lessons combo (yet).
And no, you won’t need to order a side of fries to practice your Spanish.

But what Duolingo has done is prove — once again — that creativity, humor, and a little bit of chaos can dominate the media cycle without spending millions.
The owl strikes again… and this time, he’s nesting in the most unexpected places.
