Do you ever wonder who first thought of Elevators? The first elevator was installed in the Haughwout Department Store in New York in 1857. It was powered by a steam engine and travelled a very slow 40 feet per minute. Ultimately, it was shut down after three years because customers refused to accept it. Early elevators tended to be installed at fancy hotels and were often seen as curiosities, but with the advent of taller buildings and penthouse suites in the late 1800s, they quickly became architectural staples. The first patent issued for a “vertical railway” was filed in 1859 by Otis Tufts; his elevator debuted in New York’s Fifth Avenue Hotel that same year. Elisha Otis patented his own much simpler design in 1861; however, Elisha Otis’s version included a safety break. Elisha Otis even demonstrated how his safety break worked during a demonstration he held at the 1854 World's Fair in New York. His safety break turned out to be a crucial factor that increased the public’s acceptance of elevators and gave his version the edge over Otis Tuft’s. Soon after, the eight-story Equitable Life Building in downtown Manhattan, built in 1870, became the first office building to feature elevators from the design stage. The elevators were based on hydraulics and built by the Otis Elevator Company (notably, the company is still the largest manufacturer of vertical elevators today). In the first two decades of the 20th century, the modern electric traction elevator was developed; it remains the industry standard today.
