Scott Seamans, Lyndon “Duke” Hanson, and George Boedecker, Jr. debuted their first pair of Crocs at the 2002 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Florida. They were inspired by Dutch clogs and were originally intended to be boat shoes. Made of a patented foam material, they were designed to perform on both land and sea, just like crocodiles – hence their name. In the mid-2000s, Crocs acquired Jibbitz to turn the holes in their shoes into profitable charm holders – a trend that Croc-wearers still participate in today. For many years, Crocs were considered “ugly” in fashion circles, but they’ve recently been considered more on-trend. In fact, in 2020, Crocs reported record revenue, possibly due to the fact that the shoes are thought to be very comfortable and practical.
