City of Galveston, Texas - Government
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Coyote Town Hall tonight at Moody Gardens with Animal Services supervisor Josh Henderson and Gulf Coast Canine project researchers Bridgett vonHoldt and Kristin Brzeski. More than 120 island residents attended the town hall to learn more about the ongoing coyote research. A few takeaways from the meeting: The City has received seven new GPS collars to place on coyotes To date, researchers have identified four distinct coyote family groups Coyotes throughout the island that have been found to carry red wolves in their DNA, though not all coyotes have the DNA. The higher end included a coyote with 69 percent red wolf genetic ancestry Texas and Louisiana are the last known locations of animals with red wolf ancestry living in the wild Researchers are identifying ways to preserve the critically-endangered red wolf species, including methods such as “bio-banking” Continue helping us track coyotes through our public database at https://www.galvestontx.gov/1157/Coyote-Managment
