These competitions fulfill part of the all-volunteer nonprofit organization’s mission to advance visual arts and art education throughout the region. Contest rules allow artists to enter up to three total works. The competition has six categories: works on canvas and board, works on paper, photography, digital art (pieces created via computer and photos that have been manipulated significantly using computer software), mixed-media wall-hung, and 3-D (sculpture, pottery, art dolls, wood carvings, metalwork, etc.). Every Art League juried contest is open to both member and nonmember artists. Houston resident Missy Rorrer judged the Winter 2022 Juried Show. A jewelry designer, Rorrer is active in the arts in various ways. She serves on the Visual Arts Committee of Webster Presbyterian Church. She has been general chairman for the Lunar Rendezvous Festival and is a member of the festival’s advisory board. She also has volunteered at the Bay Area Museum Guild. Founded in 1914, Galveston Art League has never had a salaried employee on staff. Its arts advocacy includes adult and children’s workshops, which are open to the public, throughout each year; promotion of local artists by means of its Featured Artist program; participation in ArtWalks; and gallery and online exhibits/sales that change each month. The Art League is funded through tax-deductible memberships and contributions, gallery sales, and an annual gala. To join (non-artists are welcomed as patrons) or learn more about Galveston Art League, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com or email [email protected]. Member benefits include: discounted entry fees to juried competitions, a subscription to a quarterly electronic newsletter with information about members and local art news, monthly preview parties, camaraderie with regional artists, and early notification about league-hosted workshops, which have limited enrollment.
