City of Texas City · February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements and accomplishments by African Americans. In honor of Black History Month, the City of Texas City is spotlighting and celebrating some local individuals who have helped shape our community: Reverend D. N. Benford of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City holds the record (and is in the Guinness Book of World Records!) for longest tenure as pastor of the same church. He has served as pastor of his church for more than 72 years. It all began in 1947, when Rev. Benford was visiting a friend here. His friend, who was also a pastor, was scheduled to preach at Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church as a guest pastor but was sick. He asked Rev. Benford to preach in his place. After he preached, the church was impressed and told Rev. Benford that if they were ever in need of a pastor, they would contact him. A few years later, they did just that. In 1950, the church was in search of a pastor and located Rev. Benford. He preached again there that June and, in August, the church voted him to be their new pastor. He has been there ever since. Rev. Benford was also instrumental in the process of erasing segregation from Galveston County and played a pivotal role in the integration of both Texas City and La Marque High Schools.
