Galveston Art League announces two workshops to kick off the New Year: a papier mache mask workshop on Jan. 4 and Jan. 11, and “Art Journal Discovery” on Jan. 7. Both of these low-cost workshops are open to the public and will be held in the Art League’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston. Papier Mache Workshop Galveston Art League member Amy Slaughter will teach participants to make a papier mache Mardi Gras mask from noon until 4 p.m. on the first and second Wednesdays in January. On Wednesday, Jan. 4, the participating artists will build their armature and cover it with papier mache. On Jan. 11, masks will be painted. “Bring your creativity with you and any recyclable item that would help your armature,” Slaughter says. For instance, possible materials to bring are toilet paper and paper towel tubes; empty water bottles, yogurt containers or Jell-O cups; and corrugated cardboard. The masks will be displayed in the Galveston Art League Gallery in advance of Mardi Gras. Or if the crafters want to wear them home upon completion, that’s fine, too. Please preregister for this class on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com; the class fee is $50. Art Journal Discovery Sharon Hendry will teach the basics of art journaling and how to use journaling to strengthen creativity. The workshop will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7. Hendry will demonstrate techniques for backgrounds, collaging imagery and text use on the pages of journals. Her techniques can be adapted for inspiration to spark creativity on other projects, too. The art journal workshop costs $50; students need to bring blank books and art supplies of your choice. Registration and payment are available on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.
