Sunday, Sept. 18 – the date for the Galveston Art League’s annual gala – presents an opportunity
for the public to support visual arts and art education in our Gulf Coast region. This year’s fundraiser gala, which includes a multicourse brunch and live music, will start at 1 p.m. in the historic Garten Verein, 2704 Ave. O in Galveston. Art League gala planners selected “Sunday Afternoon in the Park” as this year’s theme, which will be carried out with fresh floral arrangements and lavish table decor. Attire is “Sunday casual,” or attendees may attend in costume as a famous artist or as a character from a famous artwork. Food and Festivities The 2½-hour gala lineup includes these activities: Curtis Gillins and his band will play music from diverse genres. Seven actors from Standing Ovation Theater, an organization based in Webster, will dress as well-known artwork or favorite artists. They will mingle with guests during the afternoon. Chef Marshall Malone and Coastal Catering are serving a Gulf-inspired menu accompanied by a chocolate dessert. Available beverages: water, tea, coffee, mimosas, beer, and wine. A wide range of silent auction items will be up for bids. Artists, area merchants, and artisans have contributed services, framed photographs and paintings, jewelry, collectible pottery, spa items, gift cards, and much more. Raffle drawings include a painting by award-winning artist and Art League member Leroy LeFlore. He has won many awards in art competitions. Raffle tickets cost $5 apiece; for $20, you’ll receive five raffle tickets. Raffle tickets are being sold in advance from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays at the Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. You do not have to be present to win a raffle prize. General-seating tickets for the gala are $100. Sponsorships are offered at two levels: tables of eight for $2,000 and tables of 10 for $2,500. Tickets may be purchased online with credit cards on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com (click on the “Events” tab and then select the last option from the drop- down menu). You may also pay for your tickets in person from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in the 2117A Postoffice gallery. Gala Aids Art League Activities Proceeds from this gala will go into the general budget for the nonprofit, all-volunteer Galveston Art League. One major aspect of Art League outreach is the organization’s downtown Galveston art gallery, a place where local artists display and sell their work. But there’s much more to the Art League. It holds adult and children’s workshops throughout the year, and hosts special exhibits such as this summer’s Juneteenth display of Black art by the late Dr. Erma M. Phillips, and offers summer art camps for children. Galveston Art League also participates in ArtWalks and organizes trips that the public may take part in. The Galveston Art League Board of Directors hopes the public will join the organization in celebrating its 108 th birthday during the gala. Historically, this has been a marvelous event with great art for every taste and budget. This year, enjoy a Sunday afternoon mingling in the lovely environs of the Garten Verein with friends and great food while bidding on the rich array of items in the silent auction.
