First Baptist Church of Texas City From Our Family Pastor, Dennis Johns: Every Sunday is Super! This Sunday is the culmination of the professional football season, and there is much fanfare surrounding this most-anticipated league championship. It is estimated that well over 100 million people around the world will gather in homes, garages, eateries, ballrooms, establishments affiliated with spirits, fellowship halls, and many other exciting, and not so exciting, spaces to observe the grandest finale in all of sports. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know that there is a bit of notoriety surrounding this event. Although I am aware of a few peculiar individuals who do not even care about the football being played but will demand silence during the commercial breaks in order to fully appreciate the 30 second productions called advertisements (can you believe that football fans?). Okay, I admit, I enjoy the commercials too; but have you noticed that the advertisers never say the actual title of the event? There are a few ads that are from the “Official Sponsors,” but most do not include such language. The National Football League (NFL) trademarked the phrase “Super Bowl” (there, I said it) back in 1969 and considers any commercial use of the term to be in violation. The NFL strictly enforces these trademark laws to avoid confusion among its official sponsors. They don’t want any false representation by any entity. The NFL has also trademarked the team names and logos understandably, but did you know that “Super Sunday” is also an NFL trademarked term? Does the NFL not know that the Sunday is the church’s day? Maybe it is our fault that the world thinks it only happens one day a year. Maybe if we had approached it differently, the NFL could have never claimed it. Lol. I know I’m being a bit silly here; but really, Church, let’s reclaim that day for our own, not just one day of the year, but every opportunity that we have to gather and encourage. 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:19-25 See you Sunday! Mitchell Maintenance
