First Baptist Church of Texas City · From Our Worship & Media Associate, Jenny Skarke: The two people in my life that have played the biggest part in shaping me into the minister that I am today are Dr. Randall Bradley and John Talley. I have been serving alongside John here at FBCTC since 2012 through two internships, and now he is my boss! Dr. Bradley, the Director of Christian Music Studies at Baylor, never lost contact with me from the time I showed interest in their program from the time I finally got there. (My education journey is a story for another time!) He then encouraged me to pursue my master’s degree and has continued to support me since graduation. These are two men in the church music world that have encouraged me to stay on this path and never give up, and I am forever grateful for their support. This past November, Baylor’s Center for Christian Music Studies invited me to speak on a panel with two other women on the topic of “Women in Ministry.” We had the opportunity to open up about our ministry experiences to the current Baylor Church Music students. It was an honor for us to get to share our hearts with students who have not yet experienced the “real world” of ministry, and it was inspiring to hear what the other two women had to say. I have been blessed in my ministry journey with a large group of supporters. I have never felt like I was trying to be pushed down another career path because “women can’t be music ministers.” The other ladies on the panel were not as lucky as I was in that area of their journey. To get to where they are now, they both went through jobs where they were highly disrespected, which made me realize that I was in the minority! Very sad, but true. Ever since I got to FBCTC, I have felt nothing but support. Everyone on staff has welcomed me with open arms, and they have continuously made me feel like part of the team. I couldn’t help but brag on my church family when I shared my testimony to the Baylor students and staff. One of the staff members came up to me afterwards and said, “It was refreshing to hear that you have had such a positive experience in ministry so far. This is how the church SHOULD be, and you should be proud of the church you are a part of.” So to my church family, thank you. Thank you for continuously offering love and support to the women in ministry here at FBCTC. You are setting a great example, and I’m honored to be a recipient and a minister here.
