· Congratulations to Galveston Police Sergeant Jack Doraty and Galveston Fire Engineer Anastacio Urbina Jr.! The Rotary Club of Galveston on Wednesday recognized Galveston Police Sergeant Jack Doraty as the Officer of the Year and Galveston Fire Engineer Anastacio Urbina Jr. as the Firefighter of the Year. Each year, the Rotary Club of Galveston presents the vocational awards, honoring a police officer, a firefighter, an EMS, a healthcare worker, and a teacher for their service to the community. The Galveston Police Department hired Jack Doraty, Jr. in September 2001 after a career in the United States Army. At the department, he has served as a patrolman, a motorcycle officer, and a SWAT operator. Sergeant Doraty served as the inaugural Galveston Police Department City Hall officer, responsible for the protection of the City Hall complex. In August 2020, he was promoted to Sergeant and returned to patrol. He also leads the Field Training Program, which teaches new police officers through the mentor-apprentice model. Anastacio Urbina, Jr. was born and raised in Galveston. He completed the Fire Academy at the College of the Mainland in Texas City in 1997 and was hired by the Galveston Fire Department in March 1998. He began his career as a firefighter downtown. He was a firefighter on Engine 1 for 9 years before he was promoted to Engineer in 2005. He spent 11.5 years as the driver for Engine 1. He also spent a year and a half as the driver for Engine 2. He currently drives Engine 7 and is on the promotional list for Captain. In his current role as an engineer at Fire House #7 he is responsible for maintaining the fire truck, checking all the fire equipment, pump operations, and operating the portable tools for rapid response. Anastacio has received numerous awards and certificates throughout his 25-year career in the fire service. Some of these achievements include the 100 Club Hero’s Award in 2009 for saving two lives with three of his fellow firefighters. He became a member and coordinator for the GFD Honor Guard in 2000 and participated in numerous opportunities to connect with and educate the youth and community about fire safety and the roles as a first responder.
