City of Dickinson Honors the Life and Legacy of Ziyanna Jones, Calls for Action to Ensure Road Safety
Dickinson, Texas – On Tuesday night, March 28th, the City Council of the City of Dickinson recognized the life and legacy of Ziyanna Jones, a vibrant and promising 17-year-old senior of Dickinson High School, whose life was cut short due to the devastating effects of driving while intoxicated. Ziyanna Jones was a bright light in our community, with a passion for music, a self-taught fluent speaker of Korean, a praise dancer for her church, a hard-working member of Johnae’s Soul Food and Subway teams, and a future National Guardswoman whose loss has profoundly impacted her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Her passing has tremendously impacted her friends and community at large and sheds light on the urgent need to address the dangers of driving under the influence and to take action to ensure that our roads are safe for all users. According to her mother, Zaneta Wyatt, "The world lost the most caring person that would do anything for anybody. She would help them. She helped the homeless. I'm going to really miss her, but I know God needed her more."
To honor the memory of Ziyanna Jones and prevent future tragedies like this, the City Council of the City of Dickinson calls for action to rename FM-1266 from FM-517 to FM-646 on behalf of Ziyanna Jones and to seek funding from state and federal agencies to reconstruct this segment of highway, along with many others throughout the community, with the proper safety features for motorists, bikers, and pedestrians to travel safely.
"We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community members, and it is important to take steps to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. We urge TxDOT to consider renaming the highway in honor of Ziyanna Jones and approve our grant reqests for additional funding to reconstruct this segment of the road to ensure the safety of all who use it," said Sean Skipworth, Mayor of the City of Dickinson.
The City Council of the City of Dickinson expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Ziyanna Jones. Let us honor her memory by taking steps to prevent similar tragedies and by ensuring that our community remains safe for all.
