💙🐊 A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE: HISTORIC CORNERSTONE CEREMONY MARKS NEW CHAPTER AT RUTH E. LAIRD ELEMENTARY Dickinson ISD and local Masonic representatives bring a centuries-old tradition to a campus being built for generations of Gators DICKINSON, TEXAS -- There couldn't be a more fitting message for a new elementary school: Start with a strong foundation. Dickinson Independent School District celebrated a special milestone at Ruth E. Laird Elementary on October 1 with a traditional Cornerstone Leveling Ceremony, connecting a centuries-old building tradition with the future of education in Dickinson ISD. Representatives from Dickinson Masonic Lodge #1324 AF&AM, along with visiting Masonic representatives, joined district officials and members of the school community for the ceremony. And while the tradition is rooted in stone and construction, its symbolism reaches far beyond the building itself. For Dickinson ISD, it represents the foundation being created for every student who will eventually walk through the doors of Laird Elementary. 🧱 WHAT IS A CORNERSTONE LEVELING CEREMONY? Long before modern construction equipment, stonemasons depended on precision. A building's cornerstone had to be properly positioned because the rest of the structure depended upon the accuracy of that foundation. That practical necessity eventually became part of a ceremonial tradition associated with Freemasonry. During a traditional Masonic cornerstone ceremony, symbolic tools are used to demonstrate that the cornerstone is square, level and plumb — fundamental principles of proper construction. The Grand Lodge of Texas describes cornerstone ceremonies as one of the public functions historically performed by Masons, carrying forward traditions connected with the craft's stonemason heritage. Those simple construction concepts also carry a larger symbolic meaning. Build correctly. Build carefully. Build something capable of standing for generations. For an elementary school, that message seems particularly appropriate. 📚 A DIFFERENT KIND OF FOUNDATION A school is built with concrete, steel, brick and mortar. But what happens inside it is built with something entirely different. Teachers. Books. Curiosity. Friendships. Encouragement. Confidence. And thousands upon thousands of small moments that can shape the direction of a child's life. That's what made the ceremony at Laird Elementary more than simply another construction milestone. Dickinson ISD described it as a meaningful connection between the physical foundation beneath the school and the educational foundation the district works to provide its students every day. 🐊 A CAMPUS WHERE FUTURE GATORS WILL GROW Ruth E. Laird Elementary represents another chapter in Dickinson ISD's continued growth. As families move into communities throughout the district, school facilities have had to grow alongside them. The new campus will eventually become a place where young Gators arrive for their first days of school, meet teachers who may influence them for years, discover favorite subjects and begin building the skills they'll carry into middle school, high school and beyond. Today's construction site will eventually be filled with classrooms. Those classrooms will eventually be filled with children. And those children will eventually become graduates, employees, business owners, parents and community leaders. That's what makes an elementary school's foundation particularly meaningful. 🤝 A COMMUNITY TRADITION Dickinson ISD thanked Dickinson Masonic Lodge #1324 AF&AM and the visiting Masonic representatives who participated in the ceremony. Masonic cornerstone ceremonies have historically been conducted for important civic and public buildings, including schools, courthouses and other structures intended to serve communities for generations. Bringing that tradition to Laird Elementary connected the new campus with a practice extending back centuries. But this ceremony wasn't simply about looking backward. It was very much about looking ahead. 💙 THE BUILDING WILL BE NEW — THE PURPOSE IS TIMELESS Years from now, today's construction equipment will be gone. The landscaping will have grown. Hallways will be decorated with children's artwork. Teachers will be standing at classroom doors welcoming students each morning. There will be school pictures, field days, assemblies, parent nights and plenty of little Gators making memories without ever knowing everything that went into creating their school. But beneath all of it will remain the foundation being celebrated today. And that's perhaps the most fitting part of the entire ceremony. A cornerstone doesn't have to be the most visible piece of a building to be important. Neither do many of the people who help build the foundation of a child's future. 💙🐊 A STRONG SCHOOL BEGINS WITH A STRONG FOUNDATION — AND DICKINSON ISD IS BUILDING BOTH Congratulations to Ruth E. Laird Elementary, Dickinson ISD, Dickinson Masonic Lodge #1324 AF&AM and everyone helping prepare this new campus for the generations of Gators still to come. 📸 Dickinson ISD has also published photographs from the Cornerstone Leveling Ceremony through its online photo gallery. #DickinsonISD #RuthELairdElementary #DickinsonTX #DickinsonTexas #GatorNation #DISDGators #GalvestonCounty #Education #NewSchool #CornerstoneCeremony #Community #BuildingTheFuture #BayAreaEntertainer

🚨 FROM CRIMINAL PROCEEDS TO PUBLIC SAFETY: GALVESTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ADDS SPECIALIZED ROOK TACTICAL VEHICLE New armored vehicle will support deputies during high-risk incidents, rescues and disasters — and GCSO says asset-forfeiture funds covered the purchase at no additional cost to county taxpayers GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS -- Money and property connected to criminal activity can sometimes find their way back into the community in an unexpected form. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office announced it has added a specialized ROOK tactical vehicle to its fleet, giving deputies another protected platform for responding to some of the most dangerous situations law enforcement can encounter. And according to GCSO, the vehicle was purchased using asset-forfeiture funds, meaning the agency says there was no additional cost to Galveston County taxpayers for the acquisition. 🚔 SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS A ROOK? The ROOK isn't a traditional armored patrol vehicle. Manufactured by Ring Power Corporation, the ROOK is built on a compact track-loader platform and designed specifically for law-enforcement and public-safety operations. It can be equipped with specialized attachments that allow agencies to adapt it to different emergency situations. The ROOK — Manufacturer Information Think of it as a heavily protected, highly maneuverable piece of equipment designed to go into places where sending an unprotected officer could present substantial risk. GCSO says its new ROOK will provide deputies with enhanced protection and capabilities during: 🚨 Barricaded-subject incidents 🏠 Hostage situations ⚠️ High-risk warrant operations 🛟 Rescue operations 🌪️ Natural disasters 🚔 Other critical incidents 🛡️ PUTTING PROTECTION BETWEEN DEPUTIES AND DANGER One of the ROOK's most important features is its armored design. Rather than requiring personnel to approach certain dangerous locations with limited protection, the vehicle can provide a protected position from which responders can operate. GCSO says that capability is intended to help reduce risk not only to deputies, but also to innocent civilians caught in or near a dangerous situation. That can be especially important during an armed barricade or hostage incident, where responders may need to get closer to a location while limiting their exposure. 🧰 IT'S MORE THAN JUST AN ARMORED VEHICLE What makes the ROOK unusual is the collection of attachments available for the platform. According to its manufacturer, configurations can include an armored deployment platform, hydraulic breaching ram, vehicle extraction tool and grapple claw. Those tools can give trained operators options for moving personnel, manipulating obstacles or vehicles, and assisting with certain rescue or tactical operations. The specific attachment used at any particular incident would depend on the circumstances and agency procedures. 🌪️ NOT EVERY MISSION INVOLVES A CRIME One particularly interesting part of GCSO's announcement is the inclusion of natural disasters and rescue operations. That's significant in Galveston County. Our region knows hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding and the large-scale emergencies that can accompany them. GCSO says the ROOK's role will therefore extend beyond traditional tactical situations and may provide another capability when public-safety personnel are responding to emergencies where access or protection becomes difficult. 🤝 AND IT ISN'T JUST FOR GCSO The Sheriff's Office also says the ROOK will serve as a regional resource. That means surrounding law-enforcement agencies and other public-safety partners could potentially have access to the vehicle when additional tactical or rescue capabilities are needed during a critical incident. For Galveston County's collection of municipal police departments, fire departments, emergency-management organizations and other first responders, specialized equipment that can be shared regionally can provide capabilities that an individual agency may not maintain on its own. GCSO says that availability is intended to strengthen coordinated responses when lives are at risk. 💰 WHAT DOES “ASSET FORFEITURE” MEAN? This is another part of the announcement worth explaining. Asset forfeiture is a legal process through which certain property connected to criminal activity can be seized and, following applicable legal procedures, forfeited. Texas law regulates how forfeited property and proceeds may be used by law-enforcement agencies. Authorized uses are generally tied to official law-enforcement purposes, with statutory requirements governing agreements, accounting and expenditures. So when GCSO describes the ROOK as turning “criminal proceeds into public safety,” the department is referring to its use of those forfeiture funds to acquire the equipment. According to the Sheriff's Office, the purchase required no additional county taxpayer funding. 🚨 A TOOL EVERYONE HOPES IS RARELY NEEDED A ROOK isn't something residents should expect to see rolling down the street on ordinary patrol. It is specialized equipment intended for extraordinary circumstances. And in many ways, that's the point. When a hostage situation, barricaded suspect, dangerous rescue or major disaster occurs, responders may have only minutes — sometimes seconds — to make critical decisions. Having specialized equipment already available and trained personnel prepared to operate it can give incident commanders another option when conventional approaches carry significant risk. It's a piece of equipment built for situations everyone hopes never happen. But when one does, Galveston County now has another tool available. 🛡️ PROTECTING THE PEOPLE WHO RUN TOWARD THE DANGER The Sheriff's Office says the investment represents its continued commitment to protecting lives, enhancing public safety and providing personnel with tools that can help them safely resolve critical incidents. And there's another side to that equation. When deputies, police officers, firefighters and rescuers are better protected, they may have additional options for reaching the people who need their help. From a barricaded building to the aftermath of a natural disaster, the mission may change. The objective doesn't. 🚔 GET PEOPLE OUT SAFELY — AND GET THE RESPONDERS HOME SAFELY, TOO. That's ultimately what Galveston County's newest piece of specialized equipment is designed to help accomplish. #GalvestonCounty #GCSO #GalvestonCountySheriff #ROOK #PublicSafety #AssetForfeiture #LawEnforcement #FirstResponders #EmergencyResponse #RescueOperations #GalvestonCountyTX #BayAreaEntertainer PICTURES SHARED FROM GCPD FACEBOOK PAGE
🎭 CAN THE CURTAIN RISE AGAIN? FIGHT TO SAVE DICKINSON'S HISTORIC HARBOUR PLAYHOUSE HEADS TO DISTRICT COURT
A demolition order, serious structural concerns, a preservation effort and a vision for generations of young performers have placed one of Dickinson's most recognizable cultural landmarks at the center of an ongoing legal battle DICKINSON, TEXAS -- The stage has been dark for years. The seats are empty. A large portion of the roof has failed. But for supporters of Dickinson's historic Harbour Playhouse, the final curtain has not fallen. The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center announced that an appeal concerning the theater at 3803 State Highway 3 has been scheduled for February 15 in district court. According to TDMEC, the case is Harbour Playhouse, Inc. v. The City of Dickinson, Case No. 26-CV-1190. The organization says the appeal seeks relief from the demolition order and an opportunity to stabilize, weatherproof and ultimately restore the theater. But behind that announcement is a complicated story stretching back years — involving the history of a beloved community theater, serious safety concerns raised by the City of Dickinson, multiple court proceedings, disputed engineering documentation and an ambitious plan to transform the property into a new home for youth music and performing arts. 🎬 BEFORE IT WAS THE HARBOUR, IT WAS THE HOLLYWOOD The building's story reaches back to 1941, when it was constructed as the Hollywood movie theater. Decades later, retired Friendswood High School drama teacher Bennie Nipper and her husband, Oscar, helped breathe new life into the aging structure. In 1991, it reopened as the Bay Area Harbour Playhouse and became a fixture of the local theater community. Chron Under Nipper's artistic leadership, the Harbour hosted productions and gave generations of local performers a place to step onto a stage. Then came 2020. The theater closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bennie Nipper died later that year at age 91, and the theater never reopened. Its marquee famously continued carrying a hopeful message that the closure was temporary. Chron Years of deterioration followed, and Hurricane Beryl in 2024 caused additional damage to the roof, according to reporting by Chron. Chron Eventually, the question changed from “When will the theater reopen?” to something much more serious: Can the building itself still be saved? ⚠️ THE CITY SAYS THE BUILDING PRESENTS SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS Any discussion about saving the Harbour Playhouse also has to include the City of Dickinson's position. The city has characterized the property as a dangerously substandard structure. According to Dickinson's official statement, an inspection found a large section of the roof had collapsed, leaving portions of the interior exposed to weather. Officials reported exposed wiring and building components, significant water intrusion, deterioration, mold and other organic growth. Dickinson, TX The situation was considered serious enough that Dickinson Fire Marshal Amber Phillips instructed fire department command staff that firefighters should not enter the structure in the event of a fire, according to the city's statement. Dickinson, TX The property was subsequently red-tagged, restricting entry. KGTX 7 Those concerns are central to the city's argument that something must be done about the building. 🛠️ RESTORATION SUPPORTERS SAY: GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE IT On the other side is The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center, led by executive director Charles Marcus. TDMEC became involved in exploring whether the theater could be stabilized and rehabilitated rather than lost. The nonprofit has a broader mission that helps explain why the Harbour matters to the organization. Founded in 2022 by Charles Marcus and Sandra Lee, TDMEC provides free music education to underserved young people in Dickinson and surrounding Galveston County communities. Its programs serve students in grades 4 through 12 and include instruction in instruments ranging from clarinet and saxophone to trumpet, trombone, percussion and French horn. TDMEC The organization also uses a student-to-student mentorship model, employing high school band leaders as music coaches for younger musicians. TDMEC And its mission has a deeply personal beginning. TDMEC was established in memory of Ziyanna Jones, a Dickinson High School clarinet player who was killed in a hit-and-run crash. Chron What began with 13 students has grown to more than 35, according to TDMEC's current website. TDMEC For Marcus, restoring the Harbour isn't simply about reopening an old theater. It's about creating a permanent place where those young musicians — along with actors, dancers, singers and other young performers — could someday take the stage. 🎺 FROM FIRST NOTES TO A FOREVER STAGE Earlier this year, TDMEC laid out its vision through its Bridge to Band/Harbour Playhouse Restoration Perfect Vision Dinner. The organization described the concept with a fitting phrase: “From First Notes to a Forever Stage.” TDMEC The long-term concept is to turn the Harbour into a hub for youth performance, music education and community arts. A published account of the restoration campaign said supporters envisioned the restored facility as a premier youth performance venue, a home for music education and live productions, and a community arts center serving Galveston County. The Post Newspaper Chron reported in May that Marcus estimated bringing the building back to code and reopening it could require approximately $1.6 million to $1.8 million. Chron That's an ambitious undertaking. But first, supporters have to get the opportunity to undertake it. ⚖️ HOW DID WE GET TO A DEMOLITION ORDER? This is where the story becomes more complicated. Court proceedings earlier this year focused on determining whether rehabilitation was actually feasible. At a March hearing, the court gave restoration advocates time to obtain structural and asbestos evaluations before roof repairs could proceed. Dickinson, TX At the April hearing, a preliminary building assessment was presented. According to the city's account, however, the document specifically stated that it was based on a visual review and was not a formal structural engineering assessment suitable for permitting or construction decisions. The environmental documentation presented regarding asbestos also did not provide the definitive determination the court was seeking. Dickinson, TX Another opportunity was provided before a May 14 hearing. According to the city, the required full assessment still had not been completed. The court then ordered demolition within 90 days. Dickinson, TX KGTX 7's review of city emails, court records, inspection reports and interviews similarly reported that the case eventually resulted in a partial demolition order. KGTX 7 🏛️ THE CITY SAYS IT IS NOT OPPOSED TO RESTORATION That distinction is important. The City of Dickinson says its position is not that the Harbour Playhouse must disappear simply because it is old or because officials oppose a theater there. In its official statement, the city said it would welcome rehabilitation if the necessary engineering, permitting and safety requirements were satisfied within a reasonable period. Dickinson, TX Dickinson Mayor Travis Magliolo similarly told KGTX 7 that restoration could be supported if proper funding, engineering and compliance measures were in place, while also pointing to the city's responsibility to address deteriorating and unsafe properties. KGTX 7 That makes the dispute more nuanced than a simple preservation-versus-demolition argument. The two sides differ significantly over whether the building can realistically be rehabilitated, whether previous requirements were adequately met, and how much additional time should be allowed. 🎭 SUPPORTERS SAY THE BUILDING'S VALUE IS BIGGER THAN BRICKS AND MORTAR Marcus has argued that the return on restoring the Harbour should not be measured only in conventional financial terms. He told KGTX that the value would also come from exposing young people to theater and creative programs and providing additional opportunities in the arts. KGTX 7 That's where this fight becomes emotional for many longtime residents. A theater is ultimately just wood, steel, concrete, curtains and seats. But what happens inside one can become part of a community's collective memory. First auditions. Opening nights. School performances. Standing ovations. Parents watching their children walk onto a stage for the first time. And performers who started in a small community theater before carrying that confidence somewhere much bigger. ⚖️ NOW THE FIGHT MOVES TO DISTRICT COURT According to the latest announcement from TDMEC, the next major chapter is now scheduled for February 15. The organization says the appeal asks the district court for relief from the demolition order and an opportunity to safely stabilize, weatherproof and restore the property. Until that proceeding is resolved, however, the future of the Harbour Playhouse remains uncertain. A court could alter the existing order, uphold it or issue other relief depending on the filings, evidence and applicable law. The outcome should not be assumed in advance. What is clear is that both sides say public safety matters. The City of Dickinson maintains that the building in its present condition presents unacceptable hazards and that rehabilitation must satisfy applicable engineering, permitting and safety requirements. Dickinson, TX TDMEC and other preservation supporters want the opportunity to demonstrate that those problems can be addressed and the theater can be brought back to life. 💙 ONE BUILDING — TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS This story ultimately comes down to two questions that aren't necessarily incompatible: Can Dickinson protect the public from a seriously deteriorated building? And: Can it be done without losing an 85-year-old piece of the community's cultural history? The district court will deal with the legal questions. Engineers will have to deal with the structural ones. Fundraising and restoration costs present another challenge entirely. But the community will continue wrestling with a more personal question: Is there another act left for the Harbour Playhouse? For now, the old stage remains dark. But the story isn't over. And somewhere above a theater that once promised “we will be back,” supporters are still working toward the day when the lights might come on again. 🔗 RESOURCES & MORE INFORMATION The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center — Official Website City of Dickinson — Harbour Playhouse Statement KGTX 7 Investigates — Harbour Playhouse Court & Demolition Timeline Chron — History and Harbour Playhouse Restoration Effort TDMEC Giving & Restoration Campaigns The Bay Area Entertainer #HarbourPlayhouse #SaveHarbourPlayhouse #DickinsonTexas #DickinsonTX #GalvestonCounty #HistoricPreservation #CommunityArts #YouthMusic #MusicEducation #TDMEC #TexasHistory #PerformingArts #BayAreaEntertainer 🚨 TRAINING FOR THE UNTHINKABLE: LEAGUE CITY POLICE PREPARE FOR CRITICAL INCIDENTS IN LOW-LIGHT CONDITIONS League City and Bayou Vista officers train together in realistic scenarios designed to strengthen decision-making, communication and teamwork when seconds matter LEAGUE CITY, TEXAS -- Some of the most important training law enforcement officers receive prepares them for situations everyone hopes they will never encounter. The League City Police Department recently put officers through ALERRT Low-Light Active Shooter Response Training, placing participants into realistic scenarios where visibility was limited and decisions had to be made quickly. Officers from the Bayou Vista Police Department also participated, giving the neighboring agencies an opportunity to train side-by-side for the type of major emergency that could require a coordinated regional response. 🌙 WHY TRAIN IN LOW-LIGHT CONDITIONS?Emergencies don't wait for daylight. A critical incident could unfold inside a darkened building, at night, in a poorly illuminated hallway or in an environment where normal visibility has suddenly been lost. That changes virtually everything. Officers must be able to correctly identify what they're seeing, communicate with other responding personnel, maintain awareness of their surroundings and make rapid decisions while operating under significant stress. That's exactly what this training was designed to challenge. According to LCPD, the scenarios focused on sharpening four key areas: 🚨 Decision-making 📻 Communication 🤝 Teamwork 👮 Tactical response Rather than simply discussing those skills in a classroom, realistic scenario-based training gives officers an opportunity to practice them under controlled conditions. 🚔 TWO DEPARTMENTS. ONE RESPONSE. Another important part of the training was the participation of both League City and Bayou Vista officers. Major emergencies don't always stay within city limits, and extraordinary incidents can require assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies. Training together beforehand allows officers to become more familiar with working alongside neighboring departments before they're called upon to do so during an actual emergency. That interagency cooperation can be especially important during rapidly developing incidents where communication and coordination are essential. 🎯 WHAT IS ALERRT? ALERRT stands for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training. The program is based at Texas State University and provides research-based active-attack response training for law enforcement and other first responders. The FBI has recognized ALERRT as the national standard in active-shooter response training. ALERRT Center at Texas State University The goal is not simply to teach a series of movements. Training emphasizes the decisions, coordination and response principles officers may need when confronted with a rapidly evolving threat. 🛡️ PREPARING FOR SOMETHING EVERYONE HOPES NEVER HAPPENS There is an uncomfortable reality behind training like this: You prepare for the worst while hoping you never have to use what you've practiced. That's why controlled training environments matter. They allow officers to encounter difficult situations, identify problems, practice communication and learn how to work as a team without waiting for a real emergency to expose those challenges. For League City Police, conducting the exercises under low-light conditions added another layer of realism. 🚨 READY — DAY OR NIGHT The League City Police Department said it is proud to train alongside its law enforcement partners and remain prepared to protect the communities they serve “day or night.” For residents, much of this preparation happens quietly and away from public view. There are no flashing lights. No emergency sirens. No real victims. And that's exactly how everyone hopes it stays. But behind the scenes, officers continue practicing for those moments when circumstances can change in seconds and preparation becomes critical. 🚔 BECAUSE WHEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS, THAT IS NOT THE TIME TO START FIGURING OUT HOW TO RESPOND. #LeagueCityPD #LeagueCity #BayouVista #GalvestonCounty #LawEnforcement #FirstResponders #PoliceTraining #ALERRT #ActiveShooterResponse #LowLightTraining #EmergencyPreparedness #CommunitySafety #BayAreaEntertainer SWING FOR A CAUSE: MAGNOLIA CREEK CHARITY CLASSIC TEES UP SUPPORT FOR GALVESTON COUNTY FOOD BANK9/30/2026 ⛳ SWING FOR A CAUSE: MAGNOLIA CREEK CHARITY CLASSIC TEES UP SUPPORT FOR GALVESTON COUNTY FOOD BANK

The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston says Southeast Texas is moving into a wetter pattern, with rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected and rain chances increasing as we head toward Thursday and Friday. National Weather Service The good news: this does not mean everyone will experience flooding. The concern is that repeated thunderstorms could produce pockets of heavy rainfall, particularly in places where storms repeatedly move over the same area. NWS says the heavier-rain threat is expected to shift from the Brazos Valley Thursday and Friday toward the coast Saturday and Sunday. National Weather Service ☀️🌦️ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 Expect another warm, humid and breezy day, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. For inland Brazoria County — including Pearland, Alvin and Angleton — NWS is forecasting highs in the lower 90s with about a 50% chance of rain. Southeast winds could gust up to around 25 mph. National Weather Service Along Galveston Island, temperatures should reach the upper 80s, with scattered shower and thunderstorm opportunities during the day. National Weather Service BOTTOM LINE: 🌦️ Not a washout everywhere, but keep an eye out for pop-up storms. ⛈️ THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1 This is when rain chances begin increasing. Inland Brazoria County has about a 70% chance of rain, with showers becoming likely and thunderstorms possible during the afternoon. High temperatures should remain around the lower 90s. National Weather Service Galveston also has increasing opportunities for showers and thunderstorms, particularly later in the day and overnight. National Weather Service Some storms could produce locally heavy downpours. BOTTOM LINE: 🌧️ Keep the rain gear handy Thursday, especially during the afternoon. 🌧️⛈️ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2 Friday looks considerably wetter. For inland Brazoria County, the National Weather Service currently forecasts an 80% chance of rain, with showers likely during the morning followed by showers and possible thunderstorms during the afternoon. Highs should be around 90 degrees. National Weather Service For the Galveston area, showers are likely with thunderstorms possible, with rain chances continuing Friday night. National Weather Service BOTTOM LINE: ☔ Friday currently looks like the wettest of the next three days for many locations. ⚠️ AND WE'RE WATCHING THE WEEKENDThis is important. The wetter pattern doesn't necessarily end Friday. NWS says periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected to peak from Thursday through early Sunday, and locally heavy rainfall could produce instances of flash flooding. The focus for heavier rainfall is expected to move closer to the coast Saturday and Sunday. National Weather Service That means residents in Galveston, Texas City, La Marque, Santa Fe, Dickinson, League City, Alvin, Pearland, Angleton, Lake Jackson, Freeport and surrounding communities should continue checking updated forecasts as the weekend approaches. Forecast rainfall locations and amounts can change considerably, so don't focus too heavily on one rainfall-total map several days in advance. 🚗 NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADS If heavy rain develops, remember one of the most important Gulf Coast weather rules: TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. Never assume you know how deep water covering a roadway is. Heavy downpours can overwhelm drainage systems and produce street flooding surprisingly quickly. Give yourself additional travel time during thunderstorms and avoid flooded streets. 📲 OFFICIAL WEATHER RESOURCES National Weather Service Houston/Galveston — Forecasts, Alerts & Radar National Weather Service — Galveston Forecast National Hurricane Center Harris County Flood Warning System — Regional Rainfall & Stream Data 🌧️ THE BAY AREA ENTERTAINER WEATHER WATCH For now, this looks like a stay-weather-aware situation rather than a reason to panic. Wednesday brings scattered storm opportunities. Rain coverage increases Thursday, Friday looks wetter, and the coastal heavy-rain potential bears watching into the weekend. League City And looking at what's planned? You may want to keep several weekends open.🎶 OCTOBER 2–3 — VILLAGE FAIR MUSIC FESTIVAL October gets started with music. The Village Fair Music Festival takes over The Ballpark at League City, 1150 Ballpark Way, for two days. The festival is scheduled for Friday, October 2, from 5–10 p.m., followed by a full day on Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m.–10 p.m. League City It's an early chance to kick off October with a community outing before the fall and Halloween events really start filling the calendar. 👶 OCTOBER 3 — BABY CON AT HELEN HALL LIBRARY League City's youngest residents get an event of their own. Baby Con is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at Helen Hall Library. League City The library has an extensive schedule of children's, teen and adult programming throughout October, so families may want to check the full city calendar rather than relying solely on the monthly highlights. 🎭 OCTOBER 3 — SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK After spending the day around League City, you can finish Saturday evening with a little theater. Shakespeare in the Park comes to League Park from 7–9 p.m. on October 3. League City There's something pretty special about experiencing Shakespeare outdoors in the historic heart of League City — and it's a completely different way to spend a fall Saturday night. 🚔🚒 OCTOBER 6 — NATIONAL NIGHT OUT One of October's biggest community nights arrives Tuesday, October 6. League City's National Night Out runs from 6–9 p.m. in participating neighborhoods. League City National Night Out is all about bringing neighbors together while strengthening relationships between residents, police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Instead of one giant centralized festival, the celebration spreads into participating neighborhoods across the city. Expect the spirit of a good old-fashioned neighborhood gathering — families outside, neighbors meeting neighbors and first responders making their way through the community. 🌱🎃 OCTOBER 10 — ONE VERY BUSY SATURDAY If there's one date League City families should circle this month, October 10 might be it. Three notable events are scheduled throughout the day. The morning starts with the Plant Swap & Shop from 8 a.m.–noon at the Civic Center. League City Then comes one of League City's signature fall traditions. 🎃 HARVEST FESTIVAL From 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at League Park, the annual Harvest Festival brings fall fun to the historic park. The city says the free festival will feature artisan and craft vendors, food trucks, children's crafts and games, pumpkin carving and decorating, hayrides and more. There's also a costume contest scheduled for noon. Admission is free and no registration is required. League City This is the kind of event where you can bring the kids, wander through the vendor booths, grab lunch from a food truck, decorate a pumpkin and officially declare that fall has arrived — even if Texas temperatures haven't received the memo yet. 😂🍂 🔭 ASTRONOMY IN THE PARK And after the pumpkins and hayrides? Look up. League City's Astronomy in the Park is scheduled that same evening from 6–9:30 p.m. at Rustic Oaks Park. League City That gives families the opportunity to turn October 10 into an entire day of activities — plants in the morning, Harvest Festival during the day and astronomy after dark. ❤️ OCTOBER 13 — COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE October isn't only about entertainment. A Community Blood Drive will be held at the Civic Center from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13. League City For residents looking for a simple way to make a potentially lifesaving contribution to the community, this is one date worth remembering. 🏛️ OCTOBER 13 & 27 — CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS Residents who want to keep up with decisions being made at City Hall can also mark October 13 and October 27. League City Council meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. in Council Chambers on both dates. League City Community events are fun, but staying informed about local government is another important part of being connected to your city. 🎨 OCTOBER 17 — GYOTAKU ART CLASS Here's something a little different. Helen Hall Library will host a Gyotaku Art Class for adults on Saturday, October 17, from 1–3 p.m. League City If your October calendar already has music, pumpkins and astronomy on it, you might as well throw a little art into the mix. 👻 OCTOBER 23 — SPOOKTACULAR BASH And then... SPOOKY SEASON TAKES OVER. 🎃👻 The Spooktacular Bash: Kids Night at the Rec is scheduled for Friday, October 23, from 5:30–9 p.m. at the Community Center. League City This one lands perfectly in that final stretch before Halloween and gives families another seasonal event to add to the October calendar. Parents should check League City's official calendar and Parks and Recreation information for current participation and registration details before attending. 💊 OCTOBER 24 — DRUG TAKEBACK League City also has an important public-safety opportunity scheduled for Saturday, October 24. A Drug Takeback event will take place from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at 555 W. Walker Street. League City Drug takeback events provide an opportunity for residents to properly dispose of unwanted or unneeded medications rather than leaving them unsecured at home or disposing of them improperly. 🐶🐱 OCTOBER 24 — DAY OF THE DOG & CAT Later that same Saturday, the attention turns to our four-legged League City residents. Day of the Dog & Cat is scheduled from 5–8 p.m. at League City Animal Care. League City Pet lovers will definitely want this one on the calendar. And if your household operates under the well-established rule that the dog or cat is actually in charge... this may be their favorite League City event of the month. 🐾😂 🎶 OCTOBER 30 — MUSIC IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT League City is sending October out with music. Music in the Historic District comes to League Park on Friday, October 30. The city's monthly highlights list the event from 7–9:30 p.m., while the city's general calendar currently displays it through 10 p.m.; residents should check the event listing closer to the date for the final schedule. League City Either way, it provides one more opportunity to spend an evening outside in one of League City's most recognizable historic spaces. And coming just one night before Halloween, downtown League City should have plenty of October atmosphere. 📚 AND THAT'S STILL NOT EVERYTHING Here's the important part: This isn't League City's complete October calendar. Helen Hall Library alone has numerous additional activities throughout the month, including children's storytimes, teen activities, adult programs, workshops and special events. The city's October calendar also includes various public meetings and recreation programs. League City That's why the city's monthly graphic is best viewed as a starting point rather than the entire schedule. 🍁 SAVE THIS ONE, LEAGUE CITY October 2026 has turned into a pretty impressive month. Live music. Shakespeare. National Night Out. Plants. Pumpkins. Hayrides. Astronomy. Art. Halloween fun. Pets. Community service. There are opportunities to get outside, meet neighbors, entertain the kids, learn something new and simply enjoy the community. And that's what makes a local events calendar worth paying attention to. Sometimes we spend so much time looking for something to do somewhere else that we overlook what's happening right in our own backyard. League City residents can see the city's complete and continually updated schedule here: League City Official Events Calendar So save the dates, share them with your neighbors and start planning. 🍂🎃 LEAGUE CITY, OCTOBER IS GOING TO BE BUSY — AND THAT'S A GOOD THING. A welcoming weekly program at the League City Community Center is giving players of varying abilities a chance to get moving, learn the game, make friends and discover why pickleball has become such a popular way to have fun LEAGUE CITY, TEXAS -- Grab a paddle, step onto the court and get ready to rally — because League City Parks and Recreation is making pickleball even more accessible. The city has introduced Adaptive Pickleball, a weekly recreational program designed to create an inclusive, welcoming environment where participants can play, connect and have fun regardless of previous pickleball experience. And you definitely don't have to be a pickleball pro. Never held a paddle before? That's okay. Already know your way around the court? Come play. The emphasis isn't on intense competition. It's about movement, recreation, social interaction and giving more members of the community an opportunity to participate. 💙 PLAY. CONNECT. LAUGH. MOVE. Those four words sum up what League City is trying to create. Adaptive recreation programs can provide opportunities for people with varying abilities to participate in activities in an environment designed to be supportive and welcoming. With Adaptive Pickleball, participants get the added benefit of playing one of America's most recognizable recreational sports. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The smaller court and relatively straightforward fundamentals can make it approachable for newcomers while still offering plenty of challenges as players develop their skills. League City's message to prospective players is simple: No pressure. No experience required. Just come ready to have a good time. 🏓 EVERY TUESDAY AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER Adaptive Pickleball takes place every Tuesday from 4 to 4:45 p.m. at the League City Community Center, 400 S. Kansas Avenue. The drop-in price is intentionally affordable: League City residents — $1 Non-residents — $2.50 Participation is also available through an Adaptive Membership. That makes trying the program easy for someone who may not be ready to commit to a longer recreation program. Show up. Pick up a paddle. Meet some new people. And give it a shot. 🙌 MORE THAN WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SCOREBOARD Programs like this aren't necessarily about who wins the game. Sometimes the biggest victories happen before anyone serves the ball. Trying something new can build confidence. Recreation can encourage movement and coordination. Group activities create opportunities to meet people and form friendships. And, perhaps most importantly, an inclusive recreation program sends a message: There's a place for you on the court. That's what makes Adaptive Pickleball such a positive addition to League City's recreation offerings. 📍 ADAPTIVE PICKLEBALL AT A GLANCE🏓 Adaptive Pickle-ball 📅 Every Tuesday ⏰ 4–4:45 p.m. 📍 League City Community Center 400 S. Sometimes that means adding new sports. Sometimes it means modifying existing programs. And sometimes it simply means creating an environment where someone who might otherwise hesitate feels comfortable walking through the door. League City's Adaptive Pickleball program is about more than paddles and plastic balls. It's about participation. It's about connection. It's about movement. And it's about having some fun along the way. So if you've been wondering what all the pickleball excitement is about, this might be your chance. 🏓 READY TO RALLY, LEAGUE CITY?
