Get ready for ROUND 2 of the Fishes of Texas iNaturalist Contest:
Rio Grande Cichlids!
Every 2 months we will be spotlighting a different species of fish in Texas. Win this round by submitting the most observations of Rio Grande Cichlid to the Fishes of Texas Project on iNaturalist between September 1st- October 31st! Each submission will strengthen the dataset used by TPWD and researchers across the state to aid in the conservation of our native fishes and river ecosystems.
Contest Rules:
• Observations must occur between September 1st – October 31st and tagged to the Fishes of TX iNaturalist project.
• One fish per observation with photo quality good enough to correctly ID to species.
• Location information must be within 100m of accuracy.

HAPPENING NOW:
Hundreds of egrets have been seriously impacted by Hurricane Beryl when it ripped through this NWH neighborhood near Cypress.
Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas specialists are on the scene now to rescue hundreds of injured and orphaned egrets that have survived.
Hundreds more fell out of their nests during the hurricane-force winds and drowned.
​They will bring the surviving storm victims back to their campus for triage and medical care. Give now to help provide rescue and emergency assistance to these animals and others impacted.

Our total species count for Hotter than Hell 2024 is 135. The GREGs, SNEGs & WHIBs, Oh My 24 Hr winning team came in with 127 species and the Raven Lunatics 12 Hr winning team had a total of 53 sightings.

We are excited to welcome our 2024 summer interns!
Thank you to the Mary Moody Northen Endowment for making two of these internships possible.
Beatriz Johnson, Travis Moon, and Sarah Riley, all undergraduates at Texas A&M University at Galveston, will join us this summer to work with the GCSTR conservation programs and gain hands-on experience in rescue, recovery, rehabilitation, nesting and research.
They will acquire valuable skills to set them up for successful careers after graduation and help our programs continue to grow.

This beautiful subadult female Kemps ridley was found struggling in the surf on Follet’s Island due to a shark interaction.
​Thankfully our Sea Aggie Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers spotted her and were able to safely bring her to shore. After surgery at the Houston Zoo, she is back in our rehab hospital where she will continue to receive care and treatment.
Please remember to call the 1-866- TURTLE 5 (1-866-887-8535) hotline if you see a sea turtle on the beach or in the surf. It is nesting season, so it is important that you relay video or photos to our response team before engaging with these wild animals, as they might not be injured!

Over the Memorial Day weekend, our team provided a rescue response to a live stranded bottlenose dolphin found stranded at Sea Rim State Park in Sabine Pass, TX.
Our partners at Sea Rim State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife did an incredible job reporting and supporting the dolphin on the beach until our team arrived.
The young male dolphin, estimated at 3 years of age, was transported to our Galveston Rehabilitation and Research Center where our Critical Care Team provided around the clock supportive care. While providing nutritional support and initial treatments, further diagnostics were completed, and it became evident that the dolphin was suffering from an irreversible neurological condition.
Taking this into consideration, in the best interest of the dolphin the tough decision was made to humanely euthanize.
We couldn’t be more proud of our dedicated team and partners for the extraordinary efforts put forth for this dolphin, they have been working tirelessly, as has been the case with so many in the past. While this one did not bring the type of success we were hoping for, we are thankful that we were able to provide care and prevent further suffering.
Thank you to our conservation partners and the community for your support of our organization so that we can provide the highest level of care and continue to be there for the next dolphin in need.

On Saturday, Bell County Game Warden Bryan Dulock paired up with McLane Children’s Hospital trauma program manager Sarah Wheat at the Ben Hogan Golf Classic. With a few snake bites already reported in the area, Bryan and Sarah took the opportunity to speak to kids about the different types of snakes native to the Fort Cavazos area. Warden Dulock recommends that if you encounter a snake (venomous or not) in the wild, please leave it alone. If bitten by a snake, call emergency services immediately. Galveston County ARC to host Pet Pantry

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – The Galveston County Animal Resource Center (ARC) is partnering with the Houston
Humane Society to host a Pet Pantry event on Wednesday, May 1 at the Galveston County Health District.
The pet pantry is open to Galveston County residents and will provide free food for pets to individuals and families
needing assistance.
This event begins at 9 a.m. Residents are asked to stay in their vehicles upon arrival. Food will be brought to residents'
vehicles, and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Appointments are not required.

The Pet Pantry will take place at Galveston County Health District, located at 9850 Emmett F Lowry Expressway in Texas
City from 9-11 a.m. This is a free event, for those in need of assistance to help feed their pets. For more information, call

Last week, we capped off Earth Week with a tidal wave of action!
Together with Turtle Island Restoration Network, UHD Texas Rising, and St. Agnes Academy, we hit the shores for two incredible beach cleanups.
We were about to remove 15.12 pounds of marine debris at East Beach and 9.82 pounds of marine debris near Murdoch's!
​It was a true testament to the power of community and environmental stewardship. Thank you to everyone who joined us in making a splash for our planet!
