Rotary Club of Dickinson
Each year the Rotary Club of Dickinson in conjunction with the City of Dickinson, Texas - City Government plan and host a “Good Government Day” Program. The program is held in May. Through this innovative program, high school students from Dickinson High School get a first-hand look at how city government works. Students that have been previously selected as a Junior Rotarian are invited to participate in this activity. The goal of the program is to develop an awareness of how the city functions and assist students in becoming well informed and active citizens in their commmunity. Each of the available city’s elected officials provides a five minute or less overview of their background and the responsibilities of their city position. Then, the students participate in a mock city council meeting. The students from DHS are selected to fill positions of Mayor, City Council, and Department Heads. Some students also fill the roles of concerned residents. Students are provided with two proposed resolutions and additional information to be discussed during the mock meeting. Some students will argue the “pros” of the first resolution and others will argue the “cons”. This gives the students an opportunity to understand issues addressed in the resolutions and hopefully help the students to feel comfortable participating in the mock council meeting. The high school students participate in a discussion of the issues and are called upon to answer questions from their counterparts. The students and City employees joined the Rotary Club of Dickinson for a sit-down luncheon and performed the mock meeting for our members. Thank you to all who contributed to the success of this event!
