Granville Theodore Hogan, Jr. was born on January 16, 1929, in Galveston, Texas, and was the oldest of four children born to Granville Theodore and Annie Belle Noah Hogan.
Granville attended Galveston public schools and graduated from Galveston’s historic Central High School in 1947.
A member of the Central Hugh School band, he first played the saxophone before he switched to drums.
As a teen he would sit in with small club bands in Galveston and eventually played with some of the more prominent bands.
His talent didn’t go unnoticed as he was a sought-after drummer by some of the popular bands around Galveston County and Houston area in the early 50’s.

#GalvestonHistory’s African American Heritage Committee is spending this year’s #BlackHistoryMonth looking at many of the music-makers that called Galveston home.
