Painter Karen Lehr Is Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist

Karen Lehr, the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for April, is an award-
winning painter with a breezy style.
You can see about a dozen of Lehr’s works from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays April 2-25 at the Art League’s gallery,
2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston.
Her paintings are part of the April member show by the league, which changes
exhibits monthly.
All of the displayed 2-D artworks, such as Lehr’s, are ready for
hanging in their new homes. The Art League offers online shopping at
www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.
The artist is a big fan of Galveston.
She came to the island shortly before Hurricane Ike (the storm was in September 2008). Lehr had recently retired and was a “snowbird Texan,” but has ended up residing on the island more than half of each year “because this is a great place to live.”
Watercolor is Lehr’s primary medium. “I have had years of enjoyment in exploring
the possibilities of painting in that medium,” she says.
Her skill hasn’t gone unnoticed;

among her awards are Best of Show for “Old Barn” in the June 2020 juried competition
hosted by the Galveston Art League.
Lehr has honed her brushwork in a variety of ways.
“Most recently I took a three- day Zoom watercolor class from a woman who was in North Carolina.
I have received many ideas and lots of direction from quite a few watercolor artists through classes and workshops in Oklahoma, Colorado, Wisconsin, Houston and here in Galveston with Sallie Anderson.”
The league has helped her become a better painter, Lehr says.
“One of my retirement goals was to paint more, and was I ever glad to find the Galveston Art League.
After all, if I paint more, I need an art community and a way to show and share
my work.
One of the great advantages of belonging to the Art League is getting positive
feedback as I have grown as an artist.”
Lehr is a professional member of the nonprofit Galveston Art League, which
offers many membership levels and uses tax-deductible membership fees to further its
mission of promoting visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County
region.
If you’d like to join the league, make a contribution, or simply learn more about it,

NOTE: The Art League has moved its annual fundraiser gala from fall to spring,
with a lunch from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at Garten Verein in Galveston.
Guests will enjoy a catered meal, a variety of beverages, live music, silent auction, and two raffles – all for a worthy cause.
One raffle includes an assortment of alcoholic beverages, and
the other will be a range of garden gear in keeping with the gala theme of A Garden
Party.
You don’t need to be present to win; raffle tickets (which will soon be sold in the
league gallery at 2117A Postoffice St.) are $10 each or three for $25.
Silent auction items (if you have something to donate, please contact the league!) will run the gamut from local art to gift cards and donated wares and services from merchants.
Casual attire; facemasks required when not eating or drinking. Gala tickets, starting at $100, and details will be available on the league’s website; tickets also will be sold in the gallery.
